hela Sverige The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets.
Job assignments
Working with pathogenic - Risk-Group 2 - and anti-microbial resistant (AMR) bacterial species. Design and carry out "knock-outs" of targeted genes associated with AMR, using transposon mutagenesis. Optimise genomic DNA sequencing, with focus on long-read sequencing. Determine genome sequences of AMR and virulent bacteria, using short- and long-read DNA sequencing platforms. Responsibility for genome sequence data assembly, annotation and comparative analyses. Analyse DNA sequence data for diagnostics of infectious disease and determine bacterial taxonomy of novel taxa. Optimise protocols for surface- and whole-cell Mass Spectrometry-based proteomics analyses of bacterial strains. Analyse peptide sequence identification through extensive database searching and whole-genome sequence data matching. Preparation of manuscripts for publication in English-language peer-review journals and presentations at international workshops and conferences. Participate in preparations of applications for external funding for continued research. Interact with Researchers, Postdoctoral Researchers, as well as students and visiting researchers, within an active research group setting.
Qualifications
Required qualifications: PhD degree in Microbiology from an accredited university with proficiency in written and spoken English. At least five years laboratory experience, including two years Postdoctoral experience working in Microbiology research. Experience working with a wide range of bacteria, including cultivation and maintenance. Expertise with different genomic DNA sequencing platforms, with focus on long-read sequencing. Expertise working with raw DNA sequence data, including quality control, sequence assembly, annotation and comparative analyses. Experience working with MS-based proteomics analyses of bacteria. Experience designing and working with transposon mutagenesis for optimising "knock-out" mutations of antibiotic resistance factors. Expertise and experience must be documented by peer-reviewed publications.
Desired qualifications: Experience working with pathogenic (Risk Group 2) species and with antibiotic resistant bacteria. Laboratory experience including the genomics and proteomics analyses of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Expertise in identification and phylogenetic analyses in bacterial taxonomy and characterization of novel microbial taxa. Familiarity with comparative genomic DNA sequence analyses and meta-genomic analyses of microbial communities and consortia. Experience with qualitative and quantitative proteomics, using 'proteotyping'.
The successful candidate will be organized and flexible with capacity to work independently within a group focused on microbial genomics and proteomics.
Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 6 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
