Postdoctoral fellow in Solid State Physics

Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 2 years
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Physics, Lund och Köpenhamn
First day of employment: As soon as possible
Official Records Number: LTHPA 2014/951

This is a joint position between the Center for Quantum Devices at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen (Denmark), and the Division of Solid State Physics at Lund University (Sweden). The successful candidate is expected to divide her/his time between the two institutes, which are located within a short commute on either side of the sound separating Denmark and Sweden.

The Center for Quantum Devices is a basic research center supported by the Danish National Research Foundation, comprising materials research, experimental physics, nanoelectronics and condensed matter theory. The full research program for the center of excellence can be found on the QDev homepage here: http://qdev.dk/ . The research at the Division of Solid State Physics is focused around different aspects of semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science to quantum physics, to different applications. The division leads the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University - the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University (nmC@LU), see: www.ftf.lth.se , www.nano.lth.se .

Subject area

Solid State Physics

Specific subject description

Condensed matter theory

Job assignments

The research topic is in quantum devices involving superconductor/semiconductor hybrid structures with emphasis on topological systems. Depending on the interests of the candidate (to be described in the attached documents), the research can focus on, for example, numerical modeling of nanowires proximity coupled to superconductors, models for (topological) quantum computing, or quantum transport in superconductor/semiconductor junctions.

The research is expected to involve close collaboration with experimental groups at the two host institutions. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to interact with the master students and the PhD-students in the research group and contribute to meetings and seminars. Teaching might also be part of the job.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

To qualify for the position as postdoctoral fellow the applicant must hold a doctorate or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctorate, and have completed the degree within the three years prior to the last date for applications. Those who do not meet these requirements may still be considered if valid reasons can be documented. The subject of the doctorate degree should be physics or a related field. Very good knowledge in English, written as well as spoken, is a requirement.

Basis of Assessment

The main assessment criteria are expected ability to develop and pursue research of high quality and pedagogical ability. In the appointment of a postdoctoral fellow, scientific skills will be the prime consideration. The assessment of qualifications will be based on the definition of the scope of the position in question. Desirable qualifications are experience with theoretical and numerical tools expected to be of relevance for the position. These include for example BdG theory for superconductors, methods for studying topological systems, and theories for quantum transport (master equations, scattering theory, etc).

An interest in collaborating closely together with experimental physicists is important, and experience from doing so is meriting. We also encourage all applicants to include a research plan (max 2 pages), describing their interests and including suggestions for research projects.

Other criteria are estimated ability to work independently and the ability to formulate and solve scientific questions as well as skills in written and oral communication. Important personal qualities are, beside creativity and a curious mind, the ability to work both independently and in a group and experience in the scientific interaction with researchers from other disciplines and in other countries.
