Description:
A position as a PhD student in aquatic ecology is now vacant at the Department of Aquatic Resources at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The PhD project is part of a larger research project investigating large scale effects of algal toxins of aquaculture in the Baltic Sea. The PhD project will mainly focus on production, flow and effects of algal toxins and vitamins in the Baltic Sea. The project includes both field studies and chemical analyses as well as controlled laboratory experiments to investigate concentrations and seasonal variations of algal toxins. We will particularly study routes of exposure for algal toxins from cyanobacteria and filamentous algae in blue mussels. The position can also come to include aspects of ecotoxicological effects of algal toxins and thiamine deficiency on the aquatic environment. As a PhD student, you will be part of a newly started transdisciplinary research group in aquatic ecology and collaborate with another PhD project starting up at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, environmental science or a related field. Relevant experience and competence in aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology and analytical chemistry will be considered as merits. Documented experience of the ability to communicate in written and spoken English is mandatory. Other qualifications that will strengthen your application are experience in field work, mass spectrometry, data management and analysis (e.g. statistics) and communication skills. The person we are looking for must be able to collaborate but at the same time be able to work independently when necessary.
