Project title:
The Autonomic Nervous System and its Role in Atherosclerosis; focus on the Cholinergic Anti-inflammatory Pathway
Publiceringsdatum2012-04-17Dina arbetsuppgifterDescription of the research project:
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the western part of the world. Atherosclerosis is in many cases the underlying factor. Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease, where both the innate and the adaptive immunity play a role in its progression. The autonomic nervous system is the major system responsible for our internal environment and acts independently of voluntary control. The cholinergic part of the autonomous nervous system has lately been shown to modulate acute inflammation by decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in experimental models. However, the role of these modulating effects in atherosclerosis remains elusive. This PhD project aims to explore how neuronal and particularly how the cholinergic signaling may modulate vascular inflammation and progression of atherosclerosis.
The PhD student working with this project will test the hypothesis that the autonomic nervous system, especially the vagal activity, can influence the progression of atherosclerosis by modulating the inflammatory activity and will investigate the mechanisms involved. The research involves work with both in vivo experimental models (including surgery) and human material. Quantification and characterization of atherosclerosis using immunohistochemistry /immunofluorescence and different molecular-biology techniques. Cell culture will be used for exploring specific signaling pathways and flow cytometry to address cell populations and their function. The project involves statistical analysis and to work in a structured manner, both independently and as part of a larger team. We are looking for a person who is highly motivated and interested in the link between the autonomic nervous system, inflammation and cardiovascular disease. A successful project will contribute to an increased understanding on how the immune system interacts with the nervous system and its effects on the development of atherosclerosis.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a doctoral degree.
Behörighet
The general entry requirements are fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 education credits. At least 60 of these credits must be at second cycle level. 60 credits is equal to one year of full-time studies.
You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirements which is an English language requirement; Engelska B.
Bedömningsgrund
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected depending on the nature of the project.
