Project title:
Gothenburg very early supported discharge study (GOTVED): the qualitative part
Publiceringsdatum2012-04-17Dina arbetsuppgifterDescription of the research project:
Gothenburg very early supported discharge study (GOTVED) is a randomised study which aims to investigate if early supported discharge for stroke patients is useful for the patient and cost effective. It has a qualitative part as well. Stroke is a life-altering event that affects a large number of individuals throughout the world; one on six persons in the world will suffer a stroke in their lifetime. The World Stroke Organisation emphases that stroke survivors can regain their quality of life with appropriate care and long-term support. However, many stroke patients do not reach their optimal level of function and activity, partially due to lack of rehabilitation, which both affects the person's and caregiver's quality of life and also the expenses for the society. Rehabilitation concerns optimizing the levels of function, activity and the persons own participation in hers/his context and this must be performed individualised according to personal goals.
The rehabilitation process starts with the stroke nurse, who communicates with the patient in order to understand the experience of the stroke. Very early supported discharge for stroke patients is not yet evaluated but needs to be assessed since there is a move to shorten time in the stroke unit. This part will evaluate the planning of discharge and how included the patient and next of kin are in the goal setting. Also there will be studies on the perception of early supported discharge and the content of the individualized rehabilitation. Different methods will be used; participant observation as well as interviews with content analysis.
