At AstraZeneca we win through science, it's at the heart of our every success. That science is only possible when we work together - we'll always make sure you're clear about how your role is connected to our wider mission to show what science can do.

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Senior Research Scientist to join the Mechanistic Biology & Profiling Department within the Discovery Sciences, Innovative Medicine (IMED) Biotech Unit in Gothenburg, Sweden. Leading from the bench, you will apply proven skills in cell biology, immunofluorescence and LC-MS and a passion for driving scientific questions, combined with strong team working ethics, to drug discovery projects. You will join one of our teams whose remit is to support IMED projects globally with delivery of SAR profiling and mechanism of action data for project compounds.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This is a lab-based role, providing in vitro target-based and phenotypic screening to support projects in all phases of the discovery process. The role involves proposing experimental strategies, troubleshooting and making a significant contribution to the practical delivery of projects as well as novel science to advance our capability and for external presentation. In addition, the role includes day-to-day responsibilities in the Wave 1 panel of preclinical characteristics assays.

Essential Requirements

* Ph.D. or a first degree and at least 4 years' experience within a relevant scientific discipline
* Documented expertise in cell-based screening of a variety of mammalian cell types - with absolute requirements on the inclusion of primary cells and iPSC
* Theoretical understanding of assay design relevant to the pharmacology of the drug target and a practical understanding of assay optimisation and use of statistical tools to enable generation of robust, reproducible and sensitive assays
* Practical knowledge of detection technologies and technology platforms compatible with cellular assays, with emphasis on immunofluorescence, imaging, flow cytometry and LC-MS
* Hands-on experience with preclinical characterization assays such as plasma protein binding, logD, solubility and metabolic stability
* Experience in data analysis and conversion of screening data to biological parameters
* Experience in design and execution of complex pharmacology studies to understand compound mechanism of action
* Excellent communication skills and an ability to operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment
* Independent analysis and evaluation of complex data and delivery of data to agreed timelines
* Proven ability in providing technical leadership and guidance to others
* Maintain an awareness of relevant scientific and technical advances to help identify opportunities for capability development
* Scientific visibility and leadership through project contributions, internal presentations and external publications
* Excellent problem-solving skills, not limited to own area of expertise
* First rate decision making skills, coupled with tenacity to see decisions through, even in situations of ambiguity
* Track-record in publishing scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at external conferences
* Recognized scientific expertise within the area of cell biology as applied to screening and will function as a scientific expert within project teams
* Good understanding of drug discovery and how to translate their scientific expertise into new project and business opportunities
