The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

Job assignments
The main task is to accomplish a research project regarding "Functional analysis of novel fusion genes in pediatric brain tumors". Our research aims to identify cancer genes and unravel the oncogenic cellular mechanisms that drive tumor development and progression in childhood brain tumors. Moreover, we work to optimize and implement genetic methods in clinical diagnostics to improve tumor classification and guide personalized targeted treatment for patients with neural tumor types. Our research group collaborate closely with clinicians at Sahlgrenska hospital (e.g. pathologists, pediatric oncologists). In this research position, your role will be to plan and implement experimental in vitro analyses of new fusion genes identified in pediatric brain tumors. The responsibilities will include setting up and conducting cell culture experiments, perform data analysis, summarize and present results, and writing publications. We therefore assume that you can independently set up cell culture and design and manage in vitro experiments. Also, that you have good collaborative skills, and like to work in a team. In addition, together with PhD-students in the group you will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) with organizing, collecting, and managing the biobank of samples from patients, and grant writing.

The daily tasks are mainly laboratory work involving cell culturing and experimental cell biology (i.e. stably transfection cultures followed by proliferation, migration, apoptosis assays), DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, Western blotting (e.g. Phosphorylation arrays), immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and various genetic analysis, e.g. differential expression analysis of cellular constructs (e.g. expression microarray, nCounter NanoString), RNA-sequencing, Sanger sequencing, qPCR. Tasks may also include confocal microscopy, mass spectrometry, and establishing primary cultures from specific cases.

Qualifications
You should have an PhD in medicine, molecular biology, or equivalent. You should have solid practical and theoretical knowledge in cell culturing and in vitro experiments (including transfection), molecular biology methods (mentioned above), tumor biology and genetics. Practical and analytical experience of proliferation assay, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, expression microarray or RNA-Sequencing is an advantage.

Doctoral studies and previous scientific publications within the field of experimental cell biology of solid tumors is a strong merit. Established collaborations with researchers at Sahlgrenska and/or Gothenburg University is an advantage.

As we publish our results in international journals, you should master English in speech and writing. We place high demand on independence, flexibility, accuracy and collaborative skills. Emphasis is placed on previous experiences and personal suitability.

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 1 year, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
