The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
Welcome to the Institute of Medicine. We conduct interdisciplinary research and education that spans from molecule to society, in close collaboration with healthcare providers in Region Västra Götaland and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Research within the department covers several of the major common diseases, including osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity, but also blood diseases, hormonal diseases, rheumatology, allergology, diseases of the liver, stomach and intestines, and nutritional health. Much of our teaching takes place in the medical and dietitian programs and in public and global health.
The department currently conducts advanced research in disease mechanisms and treatment of various liver diseases, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration on the role of the liver in metabolic diseases and the importance of bacteria, bile salts and other factors in the intestinal microenvironment for various disease states. We are now recruiting a professor of hepatology with combined employment as a specialist physician at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Subject area
Hepatology
Subject area description
Hepatology, with a research focus on pathogenesis, pathophysiology, treatment and management of liver diseases, and related diseases where the liver is involved in the pathogenesis/pathophysiology.
The research profile aims to complement and strengthen existing research at the Institute of Medicine and prioritize collaboration within the department's areas of strength, such as metabolism, microbiota and translational hepatological research.
Job assignments
Job assignments primarily include research in hepatology. The successful candidate is expected to actively seek external funding to establish a successful research group in hepatology and develop collaborations nationally, internationally and within the department.
Duties also include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels within the medical program and other educational programs. Supervision of undergraduate and doctoral students is also included.
This position also includes some administration related to research and teaching.
The position as professor is intended to be combined with employment as specialist physician at Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU), beginning as soon as possible. Applicants must be licensed to practice medicine in Sweden with proof of specialist competence in medical gastroenterology and hepatology. The successful applicant is expected to take overall responsibility for liver care at the Division of Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and actively collaborate with the transplant unit at SU regarding the liver transplant program.
Applicants who are not licensed to practice medicine in Sweden (for example, if the language requirement has not been met) must prepare a plan to attain licensure to be employed as a specialist physician and be able to teach in Swedish within two years of employment.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as a teacher is stated in the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's Employment Ordinance.
According to the Higher Education Act, Chapter 3, Section 8, joint employment may only be held by a person who meets the eligibility requirements for both positions.
Demonstrated scientific, pedagogical and clinical competence is required. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a medical subject or other subject that the employer finds equivalent, as well as specialist competence in medical gastroenterology and hepatology or equivalent.
The ability to teach in Swedish or English is also required.
Assessment
Applicants will be evaluated primarily on the basis of scientific merit, followed by pedagogical and clinical competence, which are weighted equally. The successful candidate must fulfill each of these three requirements.
Scientific competence must be demonstrated through high-quality independent research in hepatology, both nationally and internationally. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in initiating, planning, leading and developing research, as well as the ability to obtain research grants in national or international competition. A clear progression of skill, with a focus on scientific merit from the last 10 years, will be given the greatest weight. Emphasis will be placed on publications in leading international journals, with greater weight given to the quality and impact of the publications rather than the total number. Established international networks and collaboration in national and international projects are advantageous.
When assessing pedagogical competence, emphasis will be placed on demonstrated pedagogical education and teaching experience within medicine. Documented experience in supervision at the doctoral level is also required. Documented experience in course leadership and pedagogical development will be of particular merit.
When assessing clinical competence, emphasis will be placed on clinical experience and competence in hepatology. Experience of scientific and clinical leadership in national and international networks is an advantage.
Administrative experience as well as the ability to collaborate and work as a member of a team are also advantageous.
Applicants who do not have advanced education in pedagogy from the University of Gothenburg must complete this education (or validate the equivalent education received from another higher education institution) within one year of starting employment.
