The Department aim to lay the ground for good health and sustainable development through research and education. Central themes within Food and Nutrition include eating habits, meals, the significance of food in relation to public health, as well as leadership and organisation in restaurants and institutional households. Sport science covers a broad spectrum of physical activities, from exercise and health promotion to competitive and elite sports. A major part of the first-cycle education at the Department is within the physical education teacher programme, the sports coaching programme and the health promotion programme. On second-cycle, courser are offered so students can apply for a Master degree in Sports Science. From 2020 courses in Special sport for teacher students are planned to be offered. The Department hosts one of the Swedish National Sports University (RIU) and Center for Health and Performance.

Subject area
Sports science with focus on physical education and health

Subject area description
Sport Science is about exercise and physical activity to promote health, and about performance development within competitive sport and is a multidisciplinary subject.

The subject Physical Education & Health concerns movement, physical activity and health. The subject deals with teaching and learning in the school subject Physical Education & Health. The focus is on didactics in relation to health, movement, and sport in their widest sense.

Job assignments
Main job assignments include research and teaching within Physical education and Health, teacher education and didactics. The job also includes to lead research and development within the social science part of sport science within in the research group Sport Coaching and Physical Education (SCoPE). The SCoPE research group focuses on pedagogical aspects of sport coaching and physical education. These aspects relate to learning and development; teachers, teaching and didactics; coaches and coaching. The main aims of the group are to forge links between research and practice and to provide a supportive environment in which members can thrive. Besides teaching on first and second cycle, supervision of students at second cycle and PhD is included in the job as well as administrative tasks connected to teaching.
