Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental St
2-year postdoc position at the Department of Wildlife, Fish & Environmental studies, Umeå, Sweden

We offer a postdoctoral position to study the effects of extreme weather on ungulate communities and their ecosystem services in Sweden. Extreme weather events (heat waves, droughts) may become increasingly common in Sweden and affect the performance of ungulates by reducing forage quality and inducing heat stress. At the same time, global warming may foster the current shift in Swedish ungulate communities, as wild boar, fallow deer, and red deer expand northward. In this project, we will determine the impact of both long-term, gradual climate shifts in climatic conditions as well as extreme heat and drought events on Sweden's ungulate communities.

This is a 2-year postdoctoral position, financed by the Swedish research council Formas, and based at the Department of Wildlife, Fish & Environmental studies (VFM, http://www.slu.se/sv/institutioner/vilt-fisk-miljo/). VFM offers a vibrant, international, research environment investigating a wide range of scientific fields but with a particularly strong focus on the ecology of animals and the ecosystems they live in. VFM has about 80 employees, including a large number of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from around the world. Umeå is the largest town in northern Sweden with approx. 120,000 inhabitants, a vibrant campus with two universities, a high standard of living, and frequent flight and train connections to the rest of the world.

Duties:
Using data spanning much of Sweden over several decades, the postdoctoral researcher will lead analyses to determine the relationship between extreme weather, ungulate population performance (number of calves/female, calf weight), and forage quality (nitrogen content). Further, the postdoc, as part of a bigger team, will investigate the impact of extreme weather on the relative ecosystem services value of each ungulate species to hunting and recreation, as well as the estimated cost of damage to forests and crops. The project will use diverse methods, including camera traps, records from collared females, historical phenology data, and remote sensing. The successful candidate will also contribute to outreach activities with relevant authorities and stakeholder groups. The postdoc will work as part of a team existing of PhD students, postdoctoral and senior researchers.

Qualifications:
You have a PhD degree in ecology or other relevant subject, with a specialisation related to the project such as animal ecology and behavioural ecology. You are fluent in spoken and written English and can document experience in communicating science to diverse publics, including international conferences. You also have excellent English writing skills and have published peer-reviewed scientific papers as a first author. You have extensive experience with diverse ecological field work methods and, in addition, managed field research programs, including experience with managing field personnel, developing field work and data collection protocols, and supervision of teams of technicians and students. Experience with student supervision and teaching will be evaluated positively. Experience with data management and the handling and analyses of large datasets will be seen as a strong merit.
