Workplace; Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg

Profession; PhD position in medical science-New biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease

Reference number: UR 2016/241. Project title: TDP-43 and synaptic proteins - their relation to cognition and neurodegeneration. Job assignments: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases and it is estimated that more than 100,000 people are affected in Sweden. Research over the last 30 years has shown that the pathological changes in the brain can be derived to different protein aggregates composed of ß-amyloid and tau protein in the form of plaques and tangles. In addition, previous studies have shown that as many as 50% of the AD cases also have aggregates of a protein called TDP-43 and that TDP-43 has a strong link to cognition and memory loss, stronger than for plaques and tau. Although we now have a deep knowledge about the disease, we still do not understand how these different processes leads to the symptoms of AD or what it is that triggers the disease. Biochemical tests (biomarkers) have received increasing attention, as they are valuable in clinical studies to understand the development of the disease, monitor the effectiveness of new drugs, and to diagnose the disease at an early stage in which the disease-modifying drugs have optimal effects. The overall objective of this project is to develop new biochemical tools to understand the processes that lead to AD and other neurodegenerative diseases, such as frontotemporal dementia, to which aggregates of TDP-43 has been shown to be strongly associated, and to increase the understanding of the link with impaired memory function. The focus of the project is to identify specific protein variants, as well as other potential protein biomarkers such as synaptic proteins, in cerebrospinal fluid, and the development of new analytical techniques for these biomarkers, including ultra-sensitive methods for analysis of low abundant proteins. The research group is a favorable composition for etiopathogenetic and translational research in the field of Alzheimer's and other brain diseases, with both doctors and biochemists (see http://neurophys.gu.se/sektioner/psykiatri_och_neurokemi/neurokem ). The laboratory is well equipped, with a broad range of instruments for protein chemistry, proteomics, and immunassays including for example ELISA, Meso-Scale systems, Simoa and mass spectrometry. Through our clinical partners, we have access to large and well characterized patient material. We have several ongoing co-operations with several academic research groups, nationally and internationally, as well as with industrial partners. We are looking for someone with good biochemical knowledge that have knowledge and experience using immunoassays and mass spectrometry. The work requires good interaction and communication skills and that you are careful and methodical. We are looking for a person with a strong commitment and a positive approach. Of great importance is personal suitability.

Eligibility: To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have: 1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or 2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or 3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The specific entry requirements is fulfilled if you have completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.
