The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) forms part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences has about 50 employees and is located in both Umeå and Uppsala. The Department carries out high quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The major focus in Umeå lies on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, the focus lies on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano- to macro levels and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.

Chemical and physical incorporation of bio-molecules into capillary-porous bio-materials for energy savings

Project description:

We are looking for a highly motivated post-graduate student to join our wood science and technology group to study aspects of biomolecule interactions with wood materials. The PhD project concerns development and studies on the functional incorporation of bio-molecules into wood and non-wood fibres, charcoal, veneer and solid wood aimed at increasing heat storage and conduction while retaining strength and thermal insulation properties and improving durability and sound insulation properties of the initial material. The specific aim is to use biomass micro/macro structure as low-cost porous structures (i.e. storage cell) for encapsulation of renewable phase-change materials (PCM) of biological origin for eventual use in green building products for energy saving. The student will learn and use a variety of wood and chemical characterization techniques including FTIR, NMR, GLC and advanced microscopy approaches.

Research is conducted in an international environment where SLU is one of two Universities in Uppsala. SLU has its own campus at Uppsala that lies one hour to the north of the Swedish capital Stockholm with close connections to Stockholm airport. The city has around 150,000 inhabitants of which 35,000 are students at the two Universities.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should have a background (MSc or equivalent) in:

• applied physics with an emphasis on thermodynamics and energy technology or

• chemistry or engineering materials science.

Experience with experimental work and theoretical methods (e.g. modelling of thermodynamic processes) is a merit. Good ability to speak and write in English is a requirement (https://www.slu.se/en/education/programmes-courses/postgraduate-studies/new-phd-student/english-language-requirements/). Good communication skills, the ability to work effectively, both in a group and independently, is a requirement. Experience with writing scientific publications is also a merit.
