hela Sverige Avalanche Studios Group and its creative division Avalanche Studios is looking for a Senior World Designer to join our team. Avalanche Studios is the division dedicated to ambitious, externally published, AAA open-world games like Just Cause and Rage 2. The team is moderately sized which will give you fantastic opportunities to influence the end product alongside you pushing the boundaries of your discipline.
The Position
As the Lead World Designer at Avalanche Studios Group, you will be responsible for overseeing and supporting the creation and implementation of immersive and engaging game worlds. You will oversee a cross-studio collaborative project, working closely with developers both in NY and Stockholm and cross-functional teams, including artists, level designers, narrative designers, programmers and mission designers, to bring our game worlds to life. Your role will involve both creative direction and project management, ensuring that the team delivers high-quality world designs within given timelines.
Responsibilities:
Lead and manage a team of world designers across multiple locations, providing guidance, mentorship, and support throughout the development process.
Collaborate with the art department, level designers, and narrative designers to create visually stunning and cohesive game worlds that align with the creative vision.
Understand the interplay between gameplay mechanics, narrative elements, and simulation systems, and leverage this understanding to create the best possible game world.
Define and communicate the artistic direction, mood, and atmosphere for the world, ensuring alignment with the overall game design and narrative.
Conduct regular reviews and provide constructive feedback to the team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and growth.
Act as the primary point of contact for cross-functional teams and stakeholders, fostering effective communication and collaboration throughout the development process.
Work closely with the project manager and producers to develop and manage the project schedules, resource allocation, and budget constraints.
Participate in high-level design discussions, contributing to the creative vision and game design decisions.
Represent the world design team and effectively communicate the team's achievements, challenges, and requirements
Required qualifications:
At least 5 years of experience in a senior Design role, with at least 3 years experience in leading and mentoring a team.
Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in world design, including level layout, environmental storytelling, and visual aesthetics.
A great sense of technical know-how and functional problem-solving
Ability to communicate ideas and requirements to stakeholders
Strong understanding of game design principles, player experience, and narrative integration within game worlds.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Passion for video games, staying current with industry trends, and a deep appreciation for world design in various genres.
Desired qualifications
Experience with various game engines, editors and their workflows
Experience with World Machine, GAEA, World Creator or similar
Experience with Photoshop and other 2D packages
Experience with Maya, 3DS Max or similar
