hela Sverige Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.
From a research perspective we work to understand, treat, modify and ultimately cure respiratory disease with an emphasis on four diseases with significant unmet medical need; asthma, COPD, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Cough.
The RIA Target & Translational Sciences (TTS) department is an agile environment, with a culture that is science and patient-focused. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Precision Medicine Discovery (PMD) has the key roles of delivering human validation of our targets, including identifying Proof-of Mechanism (PoM) biomarkers, leading the development of precision medicine to drive patient selection and delivering translational clinical validation. The head of PMD is responsible for building mechanistic understanding of the target and disease, through innovative application of experimental methods and technologies, with critical accountabilities for identifying and enabling PoM biomarkers to demonstrate target engagement at First-Time-In-Man for all our drug projects, as well as leading the pre-clinical target validation strategy from target identification. Furthermore, they hold accountability for the identification and development of precision medicine strategies to select the patients most likely to benefit from our medicines, with additional accountability for building the translational clinical validation package for RIA targets, utilising public and proprietary biobanks, as well as AZ experimental medicine studies, to better understand responding sub-populations, biomarkers and the biology of our drug targets. This is delivered both from PMD and through collaboration and other TTS teams, as well as other internal and external experts and teams.
The Head of Precision Medicine Discovery is a leadership role that requires a strong scientific background as well as excellent people management and communication skills. Success depends on effective working with other heads of TTS units and so will require outstanding team working skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively to ensure scientific excellence and robust delivery to projects.
You will be accountable for:
* The delivery of preclinical human validation of all portfolio targets (in relevant in vivo models, cell types, tissue) by experimentally demonstrating presence and functional implication of the target in relevant disease mechanisms, with mechanistic understanding of target and disease
* Delivery to all RIA projects to identify and develop PoM biomarkers, Decision Making and other Exploratory Biomarkers as required for each target, aligned with clinical development plan
* Precision medicine strategies and target clinical validation strategy to all RIA projects
* Accountable for the identification of relevant patient subgroups based on biological drivers of segmentation, as required for each target
* Accountable for invention, development and implementation of key patient segmentation biomarker
* Develop target line of sight to clinic and, with TTS colleagues, extract knowledge from large omics-datasets and back-translation of AZ clinical studies
* Driving innovation and scientific excellence in Precision Medicine Discovery through internal scientific development and external collaborations.
* Manage PMD resources so project demand is met in a flexible, competent and responsive manner
* Propose, establish and manage external collaborations related to Precision Medicine Discovery and be accountable for strategic planning and long-term development of Precision Medicine Discovery in close collaboration with the Head of Department and the other TTS leaders.
* Creating and maintaining a work environment in which scientific challenge and innovation are maximised and make AstraZeneca scientifically visible by publishing scientific papers and presenting data at conferences.
Essential Requirements
* PhD / post-doc in life sciences or other relevant area, alternatively MD with research background
* Demonstrable leadership and delivery in precision medicine, biomarker discovery and application to drug discovery and development
* 10 years of work experience in pharmaceutical R&D, preferably discovery and development
* Strong leadership skills ability to be a self-starter
* Excellent written, oral, presentation and interpersonal skills
* Experience and solid understanding of biology, pharmacology, translational medicine and clinical sciences, with pre-eminence in at least one of these area
* A good understanding of the drug development process, from lead identification through clinical development
* Ability to work productively in a matrix team environment.
* Experience of career development of reporting scientists
* Experience in the Respiratory therapy area preferable
