The Division of Maritime Human Factors and Navigation at Chalmers' Department of Shipping and Marine Technology is an expanding group of motivated researchers, teachers and graduate students. Contributing to Chalmers' vision of a sustainable maritime industry, the Division focuses on several aspects within the field of human factors and navigation. The Division's scholarly activities (research, pedagogical and community engagement) are divided into three focused areas; Maritime safety, Human Centered Design and Operator Performance, using both physical and simulation technologies to support these activities. Guided by a strategic plan, the group strives to accomplish these goals supported by the appointment of a Professor to work within the Division. This position will engage, in close cooperation, with industry, government and pertinent national and international seafarer stakeholder groups to conduct scholarly activities which are both rigorous and relevant and important to the
social and economic well-being of Sweden.

The Department of Shipping and Marine Technology offers a coherent education and research in a wide range of areas such as maritime environment, maritime human factors, hydrodynamics, marine structures and maritime safety. Our research helps to improve safety and the efficiency of vessels, the marine environment and the role of the operators. The Department is responsible for three international masters programs, educating master mariners, marine engineers and shore-based personnel in shipping and marine technologies. The Department currently has about 100 employees, of whom 80 are researchers and teachers. The Department has five divisions and is situated on the Lindholmen Campus. We have one of the most comprehensive simulation centre for marine transport, cargo handling, engine department, navigation and communication in Sweden.

The successful applicant will also support the Department's leadership team to fulfill the vision and mission of Chalmers Univeristy and the Division. This will include: identifying strategic research directions; obtaining research funding; attracting and retaining highly qualified personnel; contributing to a nurturing work environment.

Position summary
The Division of Maritime Human Factors and Navigation has identified an interdisciplinary focus on studying human performance in the maritime domain both in field studies and the applications of simulation and virtual reality. Safety remains central to this vision.

We expect the professor to contribute to the work in the following focus areas and also to specialize in at least one of the areas:
1. Maritime Safety (escape, evacuation and survival, rescue, pedagogy)
2. Human Centered Design (participatory ergonomics, automation)
3. Human Performance in Maritime Environments (physical and cognitive demands)

Experience from previous work within these three focus areas is especially important to the position as the professor will be expected to be able to contribute in all areas and also to deepen a future focus in one (or more) areas. The position also requires support to colleagues in the development of both basic and applied research programmes with applications to both the maritime transportation and offshore oil and gas and will support regulatory development (both nationally and internationally), innovation and knowledge mobilization.

Besides the research activities and the scientific leading activities the position will also require the successful applicant to undertake administrative and teaching duties mainly on master level and supervision of post graduate students. Leadership experiences with strategic planning processes, respectful workplace/conflict resolution, academic programme reviews, development of graduate programmes/courses, international exchanges of students and faculty and a successful history of teaching and supervision are considered important to the execution of this position.

It is a permanent and full time position.

Qualifications
Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Ergonomics, Human Factors, Biomedical Engineering or a related Domain and experience from previous work within the three focus areas Maritime Safety, Human Centered Design and Human Performance in Maritime Environments is required and especially important to the position. It should be clear that the applicant has experience with and was responsible for the initiation, funding, experimental design, execution and statistical analysis of significant bodies of research, culminating in publications of work in recognized peer-reviewed journals.

Experience with empirical and qualitative research in both physical and simulation/virtual domains are critical for the position. Demonstration of collaborative/interdisciplinary research with regulatory bodies, Maritime Administration, industry and non-governmental agencies both at the national and international is also necessary for this position. Demonstration of research-related appointments such as research chair, cross-discipline appointments and adjunct appointment would be considered an asset.
