Inhalation Product Development (IPD) at AstraZeneca is a multinational organization that combines decades of experience in inhalation technology whether it is nebulisation, pMDI or DPI. We are looking for a skilled and motivated automation specialist in a role as Senior Scientist or Associate Principal Scientist to join one of our analytical automation teams in Gothenburg, Sweden. Career level depends on the level of experience for the role.

What you'll do
This is a specialist role where you will contribute to and maintain the global IPD automated testing strategy and work collaboratively with many colleagues within analytical and automation skill areas. Driving and championing the implementation of automated workflows. You will get the opportunity to use your professional skills in a highly advanced research environment. Contributing to the progression of drug projects and the efficiency and scientific development within the field of pharmaceutical science at AstraZeneca.
You will:
* Lead development and implementation of lab automation globally across IPD on our journey towards the autonomous analytical lab of the future. Step by step we will be implementing our strategy that includes autonomous mobile collaborative robots, liquid handlers and many other types of lab automation. Eventually, in a not too distant future, we'll be closing the loop by introducing AI into our workflows.
* Lead technology transfer activities where our innovative automated solutions are implemented in the QC Labs on our manufacturing sites.
* Evaluate new automated systems to understand if they should be part of the autonomous analytical lab of the future.
* Collaborate with peers outside of AstraZeneca that have also set their course towards the autonomous analytical lab of the future.
* Provide input to business cases and lead change management in conjunction with implementation of the new automated systems or software applications.
Essential for the role
To be successful in this role you will need expertise in implementation of automation in a life science setting. Good skills in written and verbal communication in English and the ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a positive problem-solving demeanour and delivery focus are required.
* University degree (MSc, PhD) in relevant subject area, with industry experience and good understanding of analytical chemistry
* Proven experience of leading development and application of automated systems and software applications
* Experience of leading multidisciplinary project teams.
* Very good knowledge of solutions available in the area of lab automation with awareness of global automation suppliers
* Awareness of the life cycle management process of automated systems
* Documented expertise in practical/hands-on implementation of automation (e.g., liquid handling robotics, sample preparation, bioassay automation).
We see that you have led and worked in a large/global organization, and we rely on you to champion and drive automation with a strong customer focus and ability to identify automation opportunities.
Desirable for the role
* Experience from project management and process analysis
* Programming of automation software including knowledge of AI and how that can be implemented in automated systems
* Awareness of demands on automation in terms of degree of flexibility, throughput, documentation, and rigor of validation needed going from a simple prototype to a production system.
* Track record of successfully driving business cases in a non GxP or GxP environment
* Involvement in supplier selections for automated systems or services Understanding of drug development and late stage/commercial requirements within pharma industry
* Understanding of regulatory expectations on automation related to validation of computerized systems
