The UK Border Agency is looking to recruit a full-time Visa and Risk Assessment Manager, based at the British Embassy in Stockholm, also covering visa applications made in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway. The role involves managing a team of staff processing applications for entry to the UK, ensuring that regulations are applied correctly and fairly and that only those who qualify are able to enter the UK, enhancing visa decision making through the provision of evidence based processes, and ensuring that entry clearance mechanisms remain robust in the face of continuing threats of abuse.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead, supervise and represent the UKBA team, providing day to day operational management to ensure that a modern, efficient and courteous service is delivered within agreed standards. This includes assessing risk, translating operational objectives and priorities into delivery, achieving targets, gathering and handling intelligence in accordance with the National Intelligence model, and working jointly with the Immigration Liaison Manager in Copenhagen.
Other key elements of the role will be to stimulate high quality decisions, as well as guide, motivate and support staff in their day to day work, ensuring that difficult and sensitive cases are dealt with quickly and effectively. Balanced against this is the need to provide line management support to staff in a pressurised role but also dealing firmly with performance issues should they arise.
The work can be highly pressurised and challenging. It is essential that the successful candidate is able to make sound decisions with minimal supervision which can be justified both orally and in writing within very strict deadlines. They should be able to settle quickly into a demanding work environment. There will be a requirement for travel, mainly within the Nordic region.

Allocate and delegate: Identifies tasks/responsibilities to be carried out by others, providing clear direction on what needs to be delivered. Ensures appropriate tools, guidance and support are provided, and tackles poor performance.

Persuade and influence: Communicates clearly and effectively, adapting style to accommodate different audiences and levels of understanding. Initiates communications with key influencers and decision makers and gains their confidence and support.
Write effectively: Writes in a clear, accurate and structured way, using plain English, setting out key issues, options and actions.
In order to fully test candidates against these competence areas, the recruitment process will involve a written application, a practical in-tray exercise, a presentation and an interview.
