Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The RIA Target & Translational Sciences (TTS) department is an agile environment, with a culture that is science and patient-focused. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.

A key role of Precision Medicine Discovery is to lead the development of precision medicine in respiratory disease, driving patient segmentation and delivering translational clinical validation. Underpinned by a robust understanding of disease relevant pathways and drivers, the Translational Science Lead (TSL) is a key scientific role, developing and delivering precision medicine strategies to select the patients most like to benefit from our medicines. The TSL also has accountability for building the translational clinical validation package for RIA targets and will utilise public and proprietary biobanks, as well as AZ MeMo studies, to better understand responding sub populations, biomarkers and the biology of our drug targets. The TSL is accountable as member of a project iPT for the precision medicine strategy and clinical target validation strategy.

Accountabilities and responsibilities:

* Accountable for delivery of precision medicine strategies and biomarker plans for specific RIA projects and target clinical validation strategy (from LI with flexibility as required)
* Accountable for the identification of relevant patient subgroups based on biological drivers of segmentation, as required for each target
* Accountable for invention, development and implementation of key patient segmentation biomarkers
* Develops target line of sight to clinic post FTIM
* Responsible to align precision medicine proposition and associated biomarker strategy with the clinical development plan.
* Works in close collaboration with Clinical Disease Knowledge and the Early Clinical Development organization to drive translational science aspects in projects in clinical development
* Works closely with PMG to enable diagnostic strategies at CDID and development of biomarkers into clinically deployable tests.
* Internal scientific expert for precision medicine and recognized by, influences and utilises the external scientific community with respect to translational science and precision medicine.
* Deepens the mechanistic understanding of target and its link to patients, disease and clinical outcome.
* Works collaboratively with the Target Validation Lead and supports target validation when needed.
* Interacts closely with Biomarker Discovery Scientists to select relevant biomarker discovery strategies for each target to ensure delivery of all translational aspects of projects.
* Forms strong connections with other parts of the organization such as required to employ technologies and methodologies that will support precision medicine strategies.
* Will effectively communicate results, plans, and strategies via scientific reports, regulatory documents, oral and written methods of communication.

Essential Requirements

* PhD or equivalent with a strong experimental drive and background in basic science related to respiratory research.
* Post-doc experience or otherwise relevant scientific research experience.
* Experience in pharmaceutical R&D.
* Strong publication record.
* Demonstrable delivery in precision medicine and target validation and their application to drug discovery
* Excellent understanding of the Respiratory therapy area and disease biology, including molecular pathways and mechanisms related to respiratory diseases.
* Experience and knowledge of the biological basis for patient segmentation, precision medicine and familiar with patient selection biomarker invention and implementation.
* Broad understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies along with excellent scientific laboratory skills and ability to experimentally address key scientific questions.
* Broad understanding of several technologies and methodologies along with excellent scientific laboratory skills and ability to experimentally address key scientific questions.
* Excellent skills in hypothesis forming and testing, able to draw conclusions and suggest next steps based on the experimental data.
* Approx. 10 years of work experience in pharmaceutical R&D, from lead identification through clinical trials.
* Experience and solid understanding of biology, pharmacology, translational medicine and clinical sciences, with pre-eminence in at least one of these areas.
* Strong leadership skills ability to be a self-starter.
