The Programme Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Sr Mechanical Engineer.

Description of directorate/division
ESS centralized design division is part of the ESS Programme Engineering division
The design division is:
A service provider of engineers and designers for the ESS projects for, in-house design activities as well as activities performed by collaborating organisations. Responsible for development and maintenance of the design processes including accommodation and maintenance of design systems and tools.The division is also responsible for the management of the Product Data Management system, the integrated CAD-model at ESS, the ESS Plant Layout (EPL) and classification and standardisation of e.g. components and materials 

Description of main responsibilities
ESS is now looking for a senior mechanical engineer who have the experience and expertise to take the role as a lead engineer for one of the ESS Neutron Scattering Instruments.

The correct candidate has the opportunity to follow the instrument from proposal to final installation and commissioning. The role as a lead engineer requires a good understanding of interaction between science and engineering and a personality to coordinate motivate and lead a team of engineers.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer in the ESS Design Division, you will follow the design and construction of ESS within accelerator-, target station-, neutron scattering instrument-project or within an enabling system such as cooling, cryogenics, vacuum etc.

Qualifications
Bachelor in mechanical engingeering (Master preferred)
5-10 years of experience in mechanical engineering design of complex engineering problems
At least 3 years of using 3D CAD Software, preferably Catia.
3 years experience using FEA/FEM packages
5 years experience in the implementation of engineering activities such as functional descriptions, requirement definitions, design (conceptual, pre-detailed and detailed studies), and definitions of complex interface systems.

Must also have a sound understanding of mechanics, cryogenics, vacuum, fluids, heat transfer, materials and have a ability to grasp complex technical problems.
Availibility to technically analyze and communicate engineering problems.
Experience in designing and building precise scientific components in a collaborative scientific atmosphere is desired. 
Knowledge and experience with neutron scattering, neutron physics and/or neutron diffraction.
The candidate will report through the ESS Design Division, but will be responsible to the Chief Engineer of the area they are assigned to.

Experience of working in an international environment is essential and excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
