The post of Deputy Director is a key leadership position in SIPRI aimed at ensuring the continuing excellence of the Institute's core work of research, outreach and dialogue. The Deputy Director's overarching responsibilities are to deputise for the Director, serve as a key liaison with senior Swedish stakeholders, act as Chief of Staff, and oversee resource mobilization for SIPRI's research and activities. The Deputy Director is the Secretary to the SIPRI Governing Board and adviser to the Chair.
The post holder is responsible for:
• Representing the institute, including in the media;
• Leading on defined key dossiers and processes;
• Staying up-to-date with issues in the field of peace research and the institute's research, outreach and dialogue programmes;
• Participating in full in SIPRI's discussions of its strategy and development;
• Liaising with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and key contacts throughout Swedish Government offices, agencies and other relevant Swedish bodies;
• Facilitating the smooth functioning of the Governing Board and conducting other activities as requested by the Chair; and
• Monitoring internal operations, such as budgeting, staff assessment and recruitment.
Requirements
The post requires a passion for issues related to peace and security coupled with a diverse combination of qualities, including a task-oriented drive and diplomatic skill, a broad vision and an eye for detail, a spirit of initiative and innovation, and the capacity for discretion along with a generous personality. S/he is an inclusive team worker.
The successful candidate should, as a minimum, have the following experience:
• At least five years participating in the leadership of a team or department, including experience with personnel line management; budgeting and/financial management; and organizational representation;
• Ten years of professionally handling issues of international peace and security, or development, or related fields;
• A track record of results-oriented management;
• Adequate experience working in mid- to senior-levels in Swedish Government positions, or in other Swedish agencies or organizations;
Knowledge and Skills
When starting the post, the Deputy Director should have, as a minimum, the following knowledge and skills:
• Good knowledge of peace, conflict, security, defence, stability and fragility issues with some academic or professional background in them;
• Excellent communication and people-management skills;
• Access to key networks in the Swedish public sector and society, and a deep understanding of Swedish society and politics;
• Knowledge of Swedish public sector procedures, labour market and laws;
• Bilingual fluency in Swedish and English, ideally further language proficiency;
• A university degree or degrees in disciplines and topics relevant to this post.
Contract period
Starting 15 August 2024. The appointment will be tenured with probation. The post is full-time. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
