Region Skåne, or Skåne Regional Council, is the self-governing authority in Skåne, the southernmost county of Sweden. It is responsible for health care, public transport and sustainable development in Skåne. We promote regional business, culture and cooperation with other regions, both national and international. Region Skåne's highest decision-making organ is the regional council, which is directly elected by the inhabitants of Skåne.
The Center for Primary Health Care Research (CPF), a collaboration between Region Skåne and Lund University, is a dynamic research institute at the Clinical Research Center in Malmö, one of Europe's most modern research environments. The CPF's mission is to carry out world-leading family medicine research through a lively exchange of expertise between academia and clinics. We operate throughout Skåne in partnership with 9 specialised research-oriented primary health care centers known as Academic Knowledge Centers.
Our main areas of interest include cardiovascular diseases, psychiatric disorders and cancer in primary care, which we investigate through clinical and epidemiological studies. We perform epidemiological research in collaboration with internationally renowned academic institutions including Stanford University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Shimane University and Heidelberg University. We have a dedicated laboratory that performs molecular analyses of patient samples to elucidate disease mechanisms behind mental disorders and cardiovascular diseases.
We have received financial support from, among others, the NIH/NIDA, the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (Forte) and the Swedish Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning (Formas). One of the research teams at the CPF recently received an NIH grant totalling around 2 million dollars to study how social and physical neighbourhood environments affect the risk of coronary heart disease.
