Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.
The department is placed at three different localities: in GU:s facilities in Gothenburg Botanical Garden, at Medicinarberget 18A in Gothenburg and at Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The current position is placed at Medicinarberget 18A in Gothenburg
Project description
This position will be within the Ecotoxicological discipline at BioEnv, within a research group addressing the effects of environmental contaminants, from specific mechanisms of individual chemicals, or groups of substances, to risk assessment of complex mixtures. Research within the group includes field studies, in vivo and in vitro experimentation, use of biochemical and molecular techniques as well as behavioral studies, theoretical studies and meta-analyses.
More specifically, the current position will be focused on microplastics, and determination of consequences of exposure in fish species. The work will take place within a research project funded by FORMAS. The aim of the project is to assess the effects of microplastics on fish, following in vivo exposure.
Job assignments
The selected candidate will be in charge of analyzing fish samples collected during a previous in vivo exposure. This includes histological evaluation, gene expression, biochemical assays and microplastic extraction from tissues, followed by microplastic characterization. The selected candidate is also expected to perform data analysis and to take part in manuscript preparation, for further publication of the results.
The employment
This is a fixed-term employment for 3 months, 100%, starting upon agreement.
Eligibility
To be eligible for employment as a researcher, the applicant must have a PhD exam in a relevant subject (environmental sciences, toxicology, ecotoxicology or similar) as outlined in the advertisement. The exam must be finished before closing date for this announcement.
Assessments
We welcome applications from candidates with previous practical experience with the methods described above (histological evaluation, gene expression, biochemical assays, microplastic extraction from tissues, data analysis). Knowledge of the microplastic research field is required. Proven knowledge in the principles and practice of ecotoxicological testing, fish experimentation, animal physiology, and practical experience in running laboratory assays with the application of good laboratory skills.
Experience in working with fish experimentation is necessary. Knowledge of physiological mechanisms and biochemical toxicity are also desired.
Excellent, proven, communication skills in verbal and written English are required, in addition to the ability to express well developed ideas and conceptual and critical thinking.
The application should preferably be written in English and must include:
• A cover letter with the applicant's justification for the application, i.e., that describes how the applicant meets the selection criteria
• A list of qualifications (CV)
• Certificate of PhD exam and other educations of relevance
• Complete list of publications, including submitted and accepted manuscripts
• Employments certificates and other documents deemed important by the applicant
The top ranked candidates will be selected for an interview, which might be held in English and could also be performed by skype.
