The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical Garden, at Medicinareberget in Gothenburg and Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The current position is placed at Kristineberg.

Project description

The department is responsible for the environmental monitoring of plankton on the Swedish west coast. This means weekly sampling in the water around Kristineberg, all together 48 sampling occasions per year. Another 50 samples per year is included in the program through the national monitoring program of the Skagerrak and Kattegat. The analyses are advanced with taxonomic identification of a wide range of plankton, from mikrozooplankton to jellyfish.

One full-time researcher and technical support corresponding to one half-time position are employed to carry out the work. The project is supported by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water management. Now the project has expanded and needs to employ a second researcher to carry out the monitoring.

Job assignments

The researcher will be responsible for the daily running of the monitoring of plankton at Kristineberg. Collaboration with staff at Kristineberg marine research station is expected and the position is based on funding from the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. The main task is sampling and microscopic analysis of microzooplankton and zooplankton, as well as photographic analysis of jellyfish.

The researcher shall conduct:

• sampling of plankton from research vessel and smaller boats, analysis of mikrozooplankton, zooplankton and jellyfish.
• perform primary production measurements using radioisotope techniques
• assist in nutrient analysis using auto analyser
• report the data to the data host (SMHI-Shark Web) and collate a yearly report of the data.

The project consists of sampling the full pelagic ecosystem at three stations on the Swedish west coast. Sampling will be carried out once each week alternating between the sampling stations. Extensive analytical work is expected including nutrient analysis on an auto analyser, isotope analysis, plankton counting and photography. It is therefore necessary that the applicant has a good knowledge of sampling and analysis of mikrozooplankton, zooplankton and jellyfish. Close cooperation with the staff at Kristineberg Marine Research Station as well as with Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management are necessary and cooperation skills and personal suitability will be given high importance.
