The Stockholm International Research Institute (SIPRI) is hiring a Research Assistant for SIPRI's Armament and Disarmament team, with focus on the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Programme. This is also an exciting opportunity to work broadly within the entire armament and disarmament research area of SIPRI as part of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC) project.
SIPRI is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. Established in 1966, SIPRI provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public. SIPRI is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages women and non-European candidates to apply.
The position
The Research Assistant will work under the supervision of the WMD Programme Director and in close cooperation with the Armament and Disarmament Coordinator. This includes working on activities implemented as part of SIPRI's participation in the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC) that SIPRI chairs and jointly manages. In addition, the Research Assistant will be involved in SIPRI's ongoing collaboration with the Alva Myrdal Centre (AMC) at Uppsala University for which SIPRI chairs a working group on nuclear disarmament in policy and international law. The Research Assistant will further be expected to support other projects in SIPRI's WMD Programme.
Tasks will include:
• Assisting SIPRI in the implementation of EUNPDC-related activities, including the general management of the Consortium; coordination of the wider European Network of non-proliferation and disarmament think tanks; management of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament paper series; and implementation of proliferation awareness courses for students of the natural sciences.
• Assisting SIPRI in the activities of the AMC Working Group on Nuclear Disarmament in Policy and International Law;
• Assisting the WMD Programme in implementing research projects;
• Supporting other projects and activities within the Armament and Disarmament research area, including event organization and administrative support;
• Taking part in the collective life of the Institute.
Requirements
The Research Assistant is expected to be flexible, thorough, and open-minded with a friendly personality and a solution-oriented approach, with a talent for multitasking and, overall, a calm and professional attitude.
The successful candidate must have:
• A Master's degree in a relevant discipline or a Bachelor's degree combined with relevant experience;
• Strong interest in and familiarity with arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament issues (familiarity with other SIPRI's research areas is of added value);
• Interest in EU institutions, policies and strategies related to arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament;
• An ability to work independently and with great attention to detail, to organize, and to manage time effectively;
• Fluency in English both written and spoken (additional languages will be seen as an advantage; a knowledge of Swedish is not required);
• Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and the ability and interest to quickly learn relevant and new software tools.
The successful candidate will also be a strong team player with good interpersonal skills. Previous experience in dealing with the diplomatic community and organizing event is considered a plus.
Contract period
Starting as soon as possible, the contract period will initially last for 2 years with a possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden when employment starts. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
How to apply
The candidate should submit:
• A letter specifying why you are applying for this position (1 page)
• A curriculum vitae including contact details for two referees
• One writing sample (in English)
In order to be considered in the recruitment process, the application must be made via the form in the vacancies section of SIPRI's website and not through any other external job sites.
