Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2,1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. We are recruiting a PhD student that, together with senior researchers, will conduct research in the area of Dependable Communications and Computations (DCC). The position is connected to two Horizon Europe projects, UPPRAISE and MEDUSA, as well as research activities within LTU's AIC3 Lab (Automation, Industrial Computing, Communication, and Control Laboratory).

Subject description
The research subject focuses on an integrated development of network architectures, resource efficient algorithms, and programming paradigms for enabling an application-tailored design of dependable communication and computation systems.

Project description
This PhD project is linked to the European research projects UPPRAISE and MEDUSA, which aim to advance intelligent, adaptive, and sustainable industrial systems. The work involves topics such as AI-assisted automation engineering, digital twins, semantic modeling, secure data exchange, and reconfigurable production architectures.
The research will also be carried out in LTU's AIC3 Lab, an advanced test environment for future industrial systems and cyber-physical environments. The lab includes autonomous robots, ABB robots with interchangeable grippers, distributed control systems, and testbeds for smart grids and real-time simulations.
The project offers the opportunity to contribute to state-of-the-art methods in digitalization and intelligent control systems, while collaborating closely with leading industrial and academic partners across Europe.

Duties
A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a PhD student you will:

• contribute to the development of AI-based methods for automation engineering,
• work on secure and intelligent industrial automation systems supporting flexible and distributed manufacturing,
• develop semantic models and apply model-driven engineering for reconfigurable system architectures,
• implement decision-support tools for energy-aware planning, predictive maintenance, and resource optimization,
• use robotics, autonomous systems, IEC 61499, and digital twins to design and evaluate distributed control solutions,
• collaborate with project partners and contribute to dissemination through publications and conferences.

As a doctoral student, you will be trained in scientific research through the publication of scientific articles in journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
You will also take both mandatory and elective doctoral courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to contribute to teaching.

Qualifications
The candidate is required to have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Industrial IT, Mechatronics, or a related field.

Meritorious qualifications include:

• knowledge of IoT, Industry 4.0, smart systems, or AI-assisted automation engineering,
• experience with distributed control systems, cyber-physical systems, or secure data exchange,
• familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g. OPC UA, PROFINET, Modbus),
• skills in digital twins, semantic modeling, or model-driven engineering,
• practical knowledge of energy-aware planning and scheduling in manufacturing,
• experience in programming (Python, C/C++, Java, etc.) and implementing intelligent automation,
• previous participation in EU or international projects.

The candidate is expected to demonstrate strong commitment and self-motivation. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with industry and academic partners, so the ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary and international environment is essential. The candidate shall have good knowledge of the English language.
