Group Trucks Technology
Position Description
MSc Thesis proposal at Volvo Group (30 ECTS credits, one-two students):
Background
At the Driving Performance & Aero group we are the customers' voice and handle all types of features impacting the vehicle fuel/energy economy, CO2 emission as well as the vehicle performance and drivability. We define, verify, and validate the customer attributes with the help of complete vehicle simulation and vehicle testing in order to deliver the right products and services to all Volvo Group brand customers.
Due to global transition, the transport sector is currently undergoing large adaptation and change in technology. This also requires current methods and development processes to be updated to capture the most important factors affecting the customer features.
Battery electric vehicles will represent a big shift in the transportation industry and logistics operators, truck owners and drivers will need to adapt to eventual differences in daily operation, such as recharging which might differ from the traditional refueling routine.
Traffic conditions in combination with driver interactions will be a key factor in the vehicle range and therefore also in the recharging strategy to be adopted for optimal operation.
The purpose of this master thesis work is to investigate alternatives to represent and model traffic events, congestions and similar situations in simulation environment. Modeling and proof of concept integration will be done in our in-house complete vehicle simulation environment (based on Matlab/Simulink).
Proposed work outline
The thesis could include, but not be limited to:
Literature study of available traffic modelling techniques.
Integrate and test suitable traffic models in simulation environment.
Investigate the effect on energy consumption and range as a function of different traffic scenarios and events in simulation.
Compare simulated effects to real vehicle data.
Who are you?
We expect that you are finishing your studies in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or equivalent and have a technical interest. You should be familiar with Matlab/Simulink.
Proposed start date is Jan-Feb 2023.
