AFRY is a European leader in engineering, design, and advisory services, with a global reach. We accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society.
We are 17,000 devoted experts in infrastructure, industry, energy and digitalisation, creating sustainable solutions for generations to come.
Job Description
The automotive industry is at the forefront of simulation technique and methodology in virtual development, yet it is constantly striving to improve. As the industry has moved towards a more simulation-driven design process the demands for simulation accuracy have increased.
Bolted joints are an integral part in the construction of heavy-duty trucks and buses. The behaviour and failure criterion of these joints are of significant importance when considering crash worthiness and road safety. The aim of this thesis is to perform, and evaluate the results of, fundamental destructive testing of bolts as well as further develop current modelling methodology for bolts used at Scania through the use of explicit FE simulations.
This thesis is a collaboration between AFRY and Scania where the problem formulation is delivered by Scania and the supervision is delivered by AFRY. The thesis student will develop new simulation methodologies and increase the overall knowledge that can pave the way for new modelling guidelines, calibrated against testing data. The result of this work is of great interest for Scania's future development of safe vehicles and simulation accuracy in general.
Proposed execution:
• Literature study regarding FE-modelling and understanding of material failure models in explicit FE simulations.
• Setup of physical bolt testing and analysis of testing data.
• Assess adequate FE-modelling techniques and useful limitations.
• Perform dynamic simulations of the testing setup and correlate the models to the test data.
• Suggest improvements upon current bolt modelling techniques.
Qualifications
You are studying your final year in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or similar and specializing in structural mechanics.
As a person you are meticulous, ambitious and curios. You are a true team player and appreciate the value added by working prestigeless together with your colleagues. You also posses good communicative skills, both oral and in writing, and can explain complex issues in a comprehensible manner.
