Master thesis proposal (20 weeks)
Material characterization of additive manufactured lattice structures
Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB has worked with additive manufacturing for several year and is today one of the pioneers in the area. Additive manufacturing is used as a complement to the traditional production methods, and is not just limited to rapid prototyping, but also used for serial manufacturing.
We are using one of the additive manufacturing techniques, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), also known as selective laser melting (SLM) or direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). The material is produced layer by layer with a laser as the energy source. The techniques could be used to produce different kinds of stainless steels, titanium alloys, tool steels, but also superalloys.
Additive manufacturing enables braver and more complex designs for tailored advanced cooling schemes in gas turbine components. Lattice and porous structures manufactured by 3D printing have a large potential as they can be used for transpiration cooling. Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB is currently exploring this kind of geometries and the offered master thesis is part of this research.
The challenge
The first part of the thesis consists of a literature study where the student becomes familiar with different types of lattices, 3D printing processes and high temperature superalloys available for additive manufacturing.
The second and main part of the thesis is to be carried out in the material laboratory. Lattice structures of different types shall be characterized and analyzed, involving cut-ups and sample preparation, microscopy and testing. The effect of post processing steps, such as heat treatment, on the lattices should be analyzed, as well as evaluating print repeatability. The results will be correlated to available flow test data obtained from measurements carried out with the same lattice samples.
To finalize, all results and learnings must be described in a written report and presented to the Siemens community.
