1 Licentiate in the research education subject: Ethology
Practical measures of horse character
The horse-rider interaction encompasses many facets of the rider and the horse. Riders differ for instance in their ‘riding style’ and personality and both impact on the horse-rider communication. This project focuses on an important quality of the horse that affects the horse-rider interaction: its character. The last decade behavioural scientists have developed, and adapted, a variety of experimental tests to evaluate horses’ character. Tests have been designed to assess character traits like emotionality, response to human presence or handling, learning abilities, and manageability. As yet, most of those are not feasible to be used in practice. Existing reliable tests will be checked for their potential to simplify observation methods, decrease the number of parameters used, and decrease the complexity and duration of the test. Also new tests may be designed and checked for consistency, reliability and practical feasibility. The project will address the validity of tests to express character qualities that riders consider relevant for the horse-rider interaction. The work is part of collaboration between SLU and Wageningen University and Research Centre in The Netherlands. The successful applicant must be prepared to work for a period of time in The Netherlands. The aims of this collaborative effort are to analyse the effects of horse character, personality of the rider and seat and balance on the horse-rider match.
