at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. (Closing date: June 30, 2016) Prolonged closing date: July 15, 2016.

The Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) is an international centre that advances sustainability science for biosphere stewardship.

Project description
Plant responses to to the abiotic environment are often determined by interactions of many traits of which often only a few are easily measurable (soft traits). The resulting growth (or fitness) response function such as moisture vs growth or nutrient concentrations vs  growth can generally be parametrized by only a few parameters (hard traits). In this project we are working on linking soft traits to hard traits using field, database and modelling approaches primarily with a focus on wetland plants. We are looking for a candidate that has experience in trait-based research, preferably with some theory/modelling skills. The work will involve literature review and theoretical/statistical modelling and may be complemented with field studies, analysis of available datasets as well as experiments. Experience in peatland ecology is therefore a merit but not a requirement.

The candidate will work within a network of peatland research groups in Sweden, Norway and Estonia. The plan is that the first year will be stationed in Stockholm (with Jon Norberg) and for the second year the possibility to be stationed  in Uppsala (with Håkan Rydin) depending on research focus. You will work closely with leading researchers in wetland ecology spanning research fields from chemistry through ecology to evolution and modelling of ecosystem services.

Main responsibilities
The research involves finding new ways of linking (hard) response traits to measurable aspects of plant species, by modelling, field or laboratory experiments as well as literature reviews. Furthermore, the candidate will act as a link between several research groups in the northern european countries with focus on wetland ecosystems in relation to climate change. Another responsibility is to participate in the general research environment at the Stockholm resilience center, with special focus on the global dynamics field, including seminars, working groups etc.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country. The applicant should have a doctoral degree in ecology or equivalent.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, the main attention will be given to research excellence

The following are particularly meriting:

• Previous research related to trait-based ecology
• Previous research related to ecological (mathematical/numerical) theory
• Experience of wetland ecosystems
• Collaborative work facilitation
• Records of independent work

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years. Start date as per agreement.
