We are now recruiting an External Innovation Manager to join the Strategy and External Innovation Department within the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic (CVRM) therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden.
CVRM is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED), AstraZeneca's small molecule biotech unit that uses our research and development capabilities to deliver clinical candidates to our late stage development organization. The Strategy and External Innovation Department is an instrumental part of the IMED CVRM with direct impact on CVRM scientific and business output through the external environment. These include identifying and managing strategic partnerships, academic collaborations as well as enhancing the project portfolio through in-licensing of external preclinical and early clinical stage assets. It has a major impact on the strategic direction and development of the IMED CVRM, ensuring that the strategy and portfolio is enhanced through external innovation and that IMED CVRM science and capabilities are fit for future challenges and opportunities.
As External Innovation Manager you will have a direct impact on the IMED CVRM output through effective alliance management of key partnerships and collaborations to advance medical science and speed up delivery of new medicines. You will contribute to the strategic development of the IMED CVRM, by identifying innovative scientific opportunities and finding novel ways to work with the best external academic and industrial partners that can help bring the next wave of innovative medicine to transform the lives of patients. The successful candidate has a combination of a scientific background with business know-how and excellent communication skills. In addition, an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with an entrepreneurial attitude and delivery focus is key.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Support the Head of Strategy and External Innovation and scientists in IMED CVRM in creating an entrepreneurial and externally facing IMED CVRM, which enables a collaborative culture internally and externally and helps sustain the scientific reputation and external visibility of the IMED CVRM
* Evaluate and manage the progress of collaborations and partnerships with external parties through effective alliance management skills
* Facilitate interactions between internal and external stakeholders through administration of key partnerships and new opportunities (initiate meetings, undertake writing of meeting minutes, presentations for governance interactions, log progress and follow up on key actions).
* Work closely with scientific experts in IMED CVRM, Scientific Partnering & Alliances (SP&A) and Business development (BD) and support the deal flow process to completion.
* Collate information and provide scientific context to terminated assets for out-licensing.
* Identify innovation scientific opportunities to partner with the best collaborator, independent of location, and help build the collaboration using innovative models of funding. Act as conduit between external stakeholders and internal scientists and proactively log progress of agreed objectives.
Essential Requirements
* PhD or MD and post-doc experience, MBA is a plus
* Entrepreneurial and innovation driven leadership abilities in a biomedical environment
* Demonstrated alliance management skills with experience of participating in successful internal / external academic or biotech collaborations, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and awareness
* Understanding of deal making / collaborations.
* Experience in biotech or pharma drug discovery / early clinical environments.
* Understanding of the CVRM Therapeutic Area is a plus
* Able to work flexibly and collaboratively
* Seek external influence and encourage smart risk taking
* Able to build external networks, publish and communicate science in an engaging and inspiring way.
* Able to give honest development feedback to peers to drive business performance
* Encourage individual responsibility and initiative and work actively to anticipate and/or remove obstacles for oneself and others
* Be visible, communicative and enable excellent collaboration. Apply a broad perspective and actively engage with others to develop solutions
