Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - a randomized clinical trial on symptoms and perceptions of health and wellbeing in patients with chronic heart failure
Application deadline: 2011-04-27
Description of the research project
The overall aim of this study is to examine the effects of a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme on self-reported symptoms, perceived health, wellbeing, and heart failure progression in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). In this intervention study, the meditative method Mindfulness Based Stress-Reduction (MBSR) will be used, which is a secular meditative method, aimed to strengthen patients inherent resources to relieve symptoms and improve wellbeing while suffering from chronic diseases and subsequent functional impairment. MBSR is a meditation practice that train one's ability to be present here and now through systematic observation and awareness of one's body and senses. Being present here and now is relaxing, and enables a sense of control over one's thoughts and feelings, which in turn create opportunities to understand, accept, and overcome stress and tension, including unpleasant symptoms.
The main reason why we want to investigate the effects of meditation in patients with CHF, is that previous research show that some patients already use strategies that resemble meditation to relieve their symptoms of fatigue and thereby improve their wellbeing (i.e. directing their attention towards a subject that strengthen their ability to focus on the present). A newly conducted meta-analysis show that participation in MBSR programs usually result in improved management of symptoms, overall well-being, quality of life, and enhanced health outcomes. No studies have been found in patients with CHF.
The person-centered perspective is central both in terms of theory and practice since the aim of this study is to develop knowledge about how patients with CHF can learn to control, and manage, distressing symptoms on their own through meditation. The objectives and research questions in the study focuses on patients explanatory models and experiences of symptoms and meditation.
Desired background
In order to be able to educate patients with chronic heart failure how to practice mindfulness using the MBSR program, it is desirable that applicants have a strong background in cardiovascular nursing and are qualified as a trained MBSR instructor.
