This role resides within the Detector Group which is part of the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Project Division under the Technical Directorate. The Detector Group routinely collaborates with partners worldwide to provide novel neutron detectors to the NSS, meeting challenging requirements with diverse technologies, many adopted from other disciplines.
Main responsibilities
The Detector Group operates in development laboratories on the ESS site, at the dedicated detector-development facility Utgård (in Lund), at the Lund University Source Facility, and at the Coatings Laboratory (in Linköping).
This position provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to make a tangible contribution to the creation of a world-class research facility. Ideally, you are technician with experience supporting laboratory and workshop activities. Mechanical and/or electrical knowledge is a plus.
You will provide laboratory and workshop support to the Detector Group. While the main workspace is the detector facility (Utgård), tasks will need to be performed at the Source Facility (close by Lund University), the Coatings Laboratory (in Linköping), and eventually onsite (at ESS). Utgård is a workshop equipped to the highest standards to be utilized for realizing ultimate neutron detector technologies. The Source Facility allows for prototypes to be subjected to well-controlled fields of radiation. The Coatings Laboratory routinely provides precision coatings for neutron-detector applications.
Qualifications
We are looking for a self-motivated person, with demonstrable experience with mechanical and electrical processes and practices. This experience has ideally been obtained in a larger technical workshop constructing prototypes, demonstrators, or similar. In particular, you possess the following knowledge, skills and competences:
• A tendency towards a "hands-on" approach to problem solving.
• Basic numerical literacy together with basic computer literacy. Basic physics literacy will be considered a plus.
• Proven mechanical dexterity, with the ability to precisely assemble complex models.
• Practical experience with wiring, soldering, cutting, and MicroTIG welding
• Some idea of assembly work within clean areas
• Experience of working in an international research environment is helpful.
• Very good oral and written English skills, Swedish is a plus.
Your profile:
• You are self-motivated, with the ability to work proactively both unsupervised but also as a part of a diverse interdisciplinary team. You fit into our team culture and share our team values.
• You are a proactive part of this team, providing hands-on support for the wide variety of workshop tasks. You are reliable, organized, able to plan, and have a "can-do" attitude.
• You react well to both the highly varied (assembly and testing) but also routine (documentation, inventory, procurement, and maintenance) daily tasks associated with an active workshop.
• You combine your hands-on approach with an ability to listen enabling you to deliver on schedule. Multitasking and reliably meeting deadlines are not an issue.
• You adapt quickly to new challenges and to develop novel solutions.
• You comply rigorously with all safety regulations and best practices. You pay attention to detail, always striving for the utmost quality and refining methods and techniques to improve the deliverables.
Duration & Location
This is a 3-year fixed-term position. The position is based in Lund, Sweden.
