Internationally, Sweden has been known as a "goldmine" for epidemiological research, particularly due to our systems of individually unique personal registration numbers, access to national demographic and health registries, and universal health care system.

Karolinska Institutet's vision is to further develop and integrate the unique resources for epidemiological research in Sweden such as biobanks, longitudinal cohorts, and newly available data sources such as computerized patient systems, the multigeneration- and prescription registries.

Within Karolinska Institutet (KI), the Strategic Research Area in Epidemiology (SfoEpi; http://ki.se/en/research/research-sfoepi ) is a research program supported by the government. SfoEpi consists of three flagship programs of research, each of which engages scientists throughout Karolinska Institutet, but predominantly at KI departments MEB, IMM, MedS, PHS, and NVS-ARC. The programs were chosen to build on existing leading-edge expertise at Karolinska Institutet, and bring together new constellations of scientists to work towards solving important medical problems using innovative methods and data. The three flagship programs are: i) Human interaction with microorganisms ii) Molecular, genetic and clinical epidemiology: steps toward translational epidemiology and iii) Lifespan approach to health and disease.

SfoEpi is now launching a new investment program to recruit leading junior researchers with particularly outstanding scientific merits and future potential.

Position as Senior Researcher

A framework amount of SEK 1,200,000 per appointment per year for four years is allocated to the recipient department within KI. The funds are intended to finance full-time positions and are to be used for salaries. The position as senior researcher is to be appointed on a permanent basis and to commence at one of Karolinska Institutet's departments not more than twelve months after the allocation decision has been taken by the board. The recipient departments are responsible for employment and salaries.

Eligibility

To qualify, applicants must have graduated with a PhD (or attained a corresponding level of scientific competence) after 1 January 2004, and able to demonstrate skills and experience in the fields of epidemiology and/or biostatistics. Individuals who graduated earlier than 2004 may be granted funding if there is particular reason for them to claim deductible time, such as in the event of sickness, military service, parental leave and internship. Reason, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with the relevant documentation.

Assessment criteria

Applicants will be assessed on their scientific expertise and the scientific quality and novelty of their projects in the field of epidemiology/biostatistics. Applicants are expected to conduct independent research of internationally leading quality in the field and expected to have published in internationally leading journals as the senior author. Detailed criteria and information about the assessment process can be found on the website http://ki.se/en/research/the-strategic-research-area-in-epidemiology-sfoepi

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English: A personal letter (entered directly into the recruitment system) including preference for departmental affiliation. Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet's qualifications portfolio ( http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio). The research plan included in the portfolio for the four year period should be maximum 5 pages.

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
