Are you interested in improving the scientific basis for early warning systems for invasive aquatic microorganisms?
Invasive species contribute heavily to global ecosystem changes and increased global transport of humans and goods combined with global warming is a powerful force in the spreading of organisms to non-native ecosystems and inducing geographic range shifts in species distributions. We are using invasive cyanobacteria as model organisms, and a combination of field sampling and laboratory experiments, to study fundamental and realized niche as well as adaptation and allelopathic potency to develop and parameterize mechanistic niche models which combine the functional traits of organisms with current and future environmental conditions.
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/en/departments/aquatic-sciences-assessment) is a competence center for applied environmental sciences with focus on environmental assessment in surface water and terrestrial ecosystems, and has a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry and biodiversity. Research focuses on aquatic ecology and biodiversity, biogeochemical and hydrological processes in catchments, aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department has about 100 employees, of which half are senior scientists, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students and the other half are laboratory, technical and administrative staff.
Kvalifikationer: Applicants should hold an MSc in ecology or equivalent. We are looking for a candidate with a keen interest in invasive species and experience of one or more of the following topics: ecological niche modelling/species distribution models, phytoplankton identification, DNA barcoding/environmental DNA, or experiments with microorganisms. Experience with field and laboratory experiments, data handling, and statistical analysis, will all be considered as merits. A valid driver?s license is essential, and proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required. Evidence of English proficiency may be required (see below).
The application should include 1) a Curriculum Vitae including publication list, 2) an application letter with your motivation for applying, a short description of experience indicating your suitability for the position, and contact information of at least two references who are prepared to provide letters of reference upon request, 3) copies of degree certificates from higher education. Candidates from outside Scandinavia or countries where English is not a native language, must provide evidence of proficiency in English (e.g. a TOEFL certificate or equivalent) or that it was the main language of a significant part of their education.
