Are you passionate about leading transformative projects and eager to shape the future of sustainable steel production? SSAB is looking for an ambitious Risk Engineer to join us on our exciting journey. At SSAB, we are committed to sustainability and aim to eliminate all CO2 emissions by 2030. This position is based in Luleå, Sweden.
At SSAB, we are proud of our history and leadership in high-strength steel. Steel has been one of the most important materials for developing society and will continue to be vital in shaping the future. From the roofs over our heads to the bridges connecting our cities and the cars of tomorrow, steel plays a crucial role. However, we also recognize that steel production is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions globally, and that must change. That is why we have developed the world's first fossil-free steel production and are committed to becoming largely fossil-free by 2030. As part of SSAB, you will play a key role in helping us achieve this ambitious goal and drive the green transformation of the steel industry.
About the position
As a Risk Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the laid-down processes for project risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and monitoring throughout the project lifecycle are followed. The Risk Engineer will support the construction area team in managing risks related to cost, time, quality, and safety, while also fostering a culture of risk awareness within the project team.
You will report to the Risk Manager within the organization and collaborate with the PMO team, project management, construction teams, contract management, QHSE departments, finance, contractors, procurement, and leadership across owner functions.
Main responsibilities
Risk Identification and Assessment: Perform day-to-day collection, collation, and assessment of risks from suppliers and contractors, and ensure that risks are properly identified, assessed, monitored, and controlled.
Project Risk Register: Maintain a comprehensive project risk register for the assigned construction area, ensuring full alignment with construction areas and project functional departments (EMO, QHSE, etc.).
Risk Meetings and Collaboration: Lead and participate in construction area risk meetings, ensuring the quality of risk data and activities. Engage regularly with the construction area team and other interface team members to maintain the risk management process.
Risk Response Plan: Ensure that the risk response plan is executed and that risks are mitigated or eliminated as needed.
Monitoring and Reporting: Monitor and follow up on individual risks, risk KPIs, and other activities. Prepare risk reports and presentations for the construction area project manager, risk manager, PMO, and other stakeholders.
Risk Audits and Compliance: Participate in risk audits and assessments to ensure compliance with company policies and industry standards. Document lessons learned, challenges, good examples, and areas for improvement encountered in the construction area.
Continuous Improvement: Contribute to improving future risk management practices by identifying areas for improvement and optimizing risk management processes.

Achievements and Goals
Ensure full alignment between construction areas and project functional departments.
Achieve construction area-specific risk elimination and reduction goals while optimizing opportunities.
Ensure suppliers and contractors follow risk management requirements.
Improve and optimize future risk management practices.

About You
Education: Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Legal, or a related field.
Certifications: Certification in Risk Management (e.g., PMI-RMP, ISO 31000) is a plus.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in risk management for large-scale construction projects, preferably within the steel, energy, or industrial sectors.
Skills: Strong knowledge of construction processes, industrial plant design, project management, and risk assessment tools (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation).

Words from your future manager
"At SSAB, we're on an incredible transformation journey toward fossil-free steel. For me personally, being part of this project through the Transformation Office is one of the most exciting and meaningful opportunities I've ever experienced. It's not just about revolutionizing SSAB's production to green steel. It's about creating a lasting positive impact on society and Sweden as a whole.
As the Project Management Office (PMO) leader, my goal is to build a high-functioning PMO that truly drives this transformation. To make this vision a reality, I'm looking for passionate and motivated individuals to join our incredible multi-cultural team. Together, we'll steer, lead, and control the project with a shared sense of purpose and determination.
Our PMO oversees six distinct functional areas, and your team will be around 7-10 people from start, plus consultants. It plays a vital role in ensuring that we stay on track with cost, time, and quality while delivering on this transformative journey. If this sounds like a journey you'd like to be part of, I can't wait to hear from you!"
