The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The University of Gothenburg promotes equal opportunities, equality and diversity.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg, and at the marine research station that is run by the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure-Kristineberg. The current position is placed at Botanical gardens, Gothenburg

Project description
Diatoms are the main eukaryotic phytoplankton and dominant the subpolar coastal oceans of both hemispheres. A new functional genomics project has been established to study the molecular responses of the marine diatom Skeletonema marinoi, the dominant diatom species in the Baltic Sea. Using a new method for genetic transformation of S. marinoi, we are building a collection of randomly mutagenized cells in which the affected genomic loci can be readily identified.

Together with the S. marinoi reference genome, the mutant collection will be an invaluable long-term resource for revealing causal relationships between individual genes and their associated functions. The new position will be involved in large-scale phenotyping of the S. marinoi mutant collection, characterizing each identified mutant of interest, and developing other related molecular tools. The person will also examine the genetic basis for the interactions of S. marinoi with its surrounding microbiome.

Job assignments
Techniques used within the project include genetic transformation of S. marinoi by electroporation, PCR-based mapping of genomic insertion sites, DNA sequencing, phenotypic screening of transformants, and development of other molecular methods such as the Crispr/cas9 system.
During the one-year period, the person might also be expected to visit for short periods a collaborating group in Canada to perform certain experiments.

The employment
This is a fixed-term employment for 12 months, 100%, starting October 1, 2018

Eligibility
To be eligible for employment as a researcher, the applicant must have a PhD exam in a relevant subject as outlined in the advertisement. The exam must be finished before closing date for this announcement.

The research fellowship is primarily aimed at applicants who have obtained their doctoral degree less than five years prior to the start of the employment period, and with at least one year of postdoctoral experience.

Assessments
We are seeking a motivated person for research studies in the field of diatom molecular biology. Preference will be given to those with experience with related molecular techniques such as diatom transformation, PCR approaches to genome mapping, and phenotyping of mutants. Experience with plant/diatom - bacterial interactions will also be an advantage. Since large datasets will be generated throughout the project, experience with large-scale data handling and database integration will be required.

Excellent communication skills, written and spoken, in English are necessary since we work in an international environment.
