The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. At present, the institute has about 380 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets.

The Institute is composed of the following five departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Pathology and Genetics
• The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology

We are seeking a researcher to join professor Christina Jern's stroke research group at the Institute of Biomedicine. We work with stroke and our main focus areas are hemostasis and genetics. We conduct large clinical studies to identify risk factors and genetic mechanisms that increase the risk of suffering a stroke and to identify factors predicting long-term outcomes. We also perform experimental studies. Please click here for more information. We are now recruiting a talented and enthusiastic researcher who has a genuine interest to work in our team and to contribute to our research.

Job assignments
The researcher, together with the PI, will be scientifically responsible for the development of two independent but complementary lines of research within the stroke research group. The first is a project on "precision medicine". This work involves analyzing the results of multiplexed protein analyses within the Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke (SAHLSIS). The second is a project on genetic factors and includes genome wide association studies (GWAS) and exome sequencing in relation to stroke and intermediate phenotypes. Here the researcher will have a coordinating role for the group's national and international collaborators. The researcher can also be involved in more experimental studies to functionally characterize genetic variants of interest. Furthermore, the researcher will write scientific articles and will co-supervise PhD students.

Qualifications
A PhD in a relevant field. A requirement is also documented experience of research projects and publications in a related field. Experience in working with large datasets, such as clinical genetic association studies including GWAS and/or large studies on protein biomarkers as well a statistical processing of these kinds of data are merits. The position requires very good computer skills and experience of programming is desirable, as is experience using web-based bioinformatics tools and public databases within relevant areas. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. The applicant should be independent in his/her work, have good interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a research organization. We value good communication, administrative and strategic skills. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Employment
The employment is limited (temporary), 24 months full-time, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
