We are looking for a Research Associate to contribute to the development of next-generation battery management systems (BMS). The position is hosted by the Automatic Control group at the Division of Systems and Control, Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology.
About the research group
The Automatic Control group consists of approximately 35 researchers within the Division of Systems and Control, which has around 100 employees and is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Our research aims to enable a sustainable future, with projects focusing on energy efficiency through advanced control methods. We work in close collaboration with industry, research institutes, and other academic groups, often in interdisciplinary constellations.
Within the group, the Battery Management System (BMS) team is a national leader in battery research. Our work focuses on modelling, estimation, and control of lithium-ion batteries. The team has received multiple recognitions, including the Volvo Car Technology Award, placement on IVA's 100 List, and best paper awards from IEEE VTS and PELS. We have published over 50 high-impact journal papers and hold several patents. Our international team values openness and collaboration.
Project description
Lithium-ion batteries are critical for electrified transportation and smart grid applications-two pillars of a sustainable energy future. Despite rapid advancements, batteries still pose challenges, such as thermal risks, ageing, low utilization, and slow charging.
This project aims to address these challenges by:
• Developing new data-driven and physics-based models for battery behaviour.
• Designing advanced BMS algorithms for real-time monitoring and control.
• Creating generalizable tools applicable to various battery types, geometries, and chemistries.
The scope of methods and applications will be tailored in collaboration with the selected candidate. The work will be supported by our extensive battery testing facilities, including equipment for commercial cells, half- and three-electrode measurements, and advanced materials analysis.
Position details
• The position is a full-time, one-year temporary employment (360 days), with the possibility of extension for up to two additional years.
• Funded by the Swedish Research Council and embedded in a well-established battery research environment.
• Competitive monthly salary with full social benefits.
• Potential to apply for a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship, where our group has an excellent success rate.
• Opportunities to collaborate with industrial partners such as Volvo Cars and ABB.
Major responsibilities
• Conduct high-quality research aligned with the project goals.
• Publish and present scientific results.
• Participate in group discussions and seminars.
• Contribute to the supervision of PhD and MSc students.
• Minimal teaching duties.
• Assist in preparing grant applications related to the research area.
Qualifications
• PhD degree in Automatic Control, Computational Materials Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Background in physics-based battery modelling and/or machine learning is considered a strong merit.
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Contract terms
Full-time, one-year temporary employment, with the possibility of extension for up to two additional years.
