We are looking for recent biotech MSc or BSc graduate who wants to develop their ability to grow and analyze microbial cultures in high performance bioreactors. The work will contribute to research and development of new production pocesses for cholera vaccines and sustainable biofuels.

Information about the division/the project
At the Department of Life Sciences (LIFE), we conduct research, innovation and education to enable a biobased society and improve human health. Our topics cover both basic and applied aspects of life sciences in the areas of systems biology, chemical biology, industrial biology and biotechnology and food and nutrition science. We develop and apply cutting edge experimental and computational technologies. Our researchers are discovering how biomolecules, living cells and whole organisms function and respond to the environment. Based on that knowledge, we engineer biological systems to produce foods, drugs and chemicals in an innovative and sustainable way. We also use this knowledge to pioneer new methods for prevention, diagnostic and treatment of human diseases, often in close collaboration with complementary competences from society, industry and academia. Our most important contribution to the society is the new generations of young scientists trained to be future leaders. Altogether, our department is a home to life sciences, where innovative ideas and creative people grow.

The project assistant position is placed at the Division of Industrial Biotechnology within the Department of Life Sciences. The Division consists of a dynamic, diverse and international group of about 35 researchers in various stages of their careers. We discover, engineer and apply microorganisms and enzymes for biotechnical production. The common denominator of our research activities is to optimize the use of renewable raw materials for the sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, materials and other products. The research spans from fundamental research to technology development and lab-scale application. This leads to deep knowledge of the studied systems and enables rational development and optimization of their respective applications. The division has an extensive instrument platform for analytics, molecular biology, protein production and purification and fermentation that is fully available for the project.

Job description
The position is intended to support ongoing research projects with laboratory work including continuous bioreactor cultivations, sampling, analysis and reporting. We are looking for a person who can carry out high quality microbial cultivations, mainly of non-pathogenic strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, in well-equipped bioreactors. The work also includes sampling, quantitative analyses and calculation of rates and yields. Cultivations of the oil-producing yeast Rhodospiridium toruloides will also be carried out, including similar tasks. In addition, the work includes participation and presentation of results in project and division meetings, and may involve supervision of project students.

Contract terms
Temporary employment

Qualifications
You should have a university education with identifiable contents of applied microbiology, and experience with cultivation of microorganisms in bench scale bioreactors. A MSc or MScEng (civilingenjörsexamen) in biotechnology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, microbiology or applied microbiology would be preferable. Experience from cultivation of microorganisms in high throughput and high performance bioreactors would be an advantage, especially experience with one or more of the cultivation platforms BioLector XT, Growth Profiler, Labfors, DASGIP or Biostream. Experience from cultivation of Vibrio cholerae or oleaginous yeasts would also be an advantage.
