Location: Academy of Design and Crafts, Dals Langed
Reference number: PER 2016/552
The ambition of HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts, is to be one of Europe's most attractive and exciting fine arts academies. The Academy pursues research and education in the fields of design, crafts and educational sciences. The institution involves itself in social issues large and small and helps contribute to a sustainable society and a brighter future.
The employment will be stationed at the Academy's Steneby educational facility, an international cultural and educational environment located in Dals Långed in Dalsland Province, approximately 170 kilometres north of Gothenburg. The Crafts and Design department at Steneby aims to provide designers and artisans who are well established in working with their material of choice with an education in the fine arts. This is central to the vision of the two subjects.
The undergraduate programmes are Textile-Body-Space, Wood-oriented Furniture Design, and Metal Art. The international programme Applied Art and Design is offered at the second-cycle (master's) level. Three doctoral students studying design are associated with the Steneby faculty. Materials, body, and space are concepts found throughout the work at the department. These concepts are reflected in the courses given. Material and technology as mediums of expression. The body as carrier of identity and knowledge. Interaction with space in terms of location, stage, public space, society, and so on.
One of the specialisations at Steneby is textiles, a subject in which students are encouraged to work expressively and explore the material in relation to the body and space. The stage is one of these spaces. Projects are related to contemporary life and are placed in a context where experiences, approaches, and new perspectives are developed. Students work artistically with costumes and unique garments; clothing seen in a wider perspective. Arts and crafts within textiles are related to the spatial context, body, and identity.
Subject area
Crafts with specialization in textile
Specific subject description
The subject bridges the span between skilled craftsmanship, conceptual interpretation, and research-based activities. The unifying factor is a reflective approach to materials, method, function, and tradition.
Staff and students working at HDK explore the subject's possibilities to produce an understanding of our contemporary age through artistic interpretation. This is a non-linear process that begins with materials or ideas. The process advances in the form of a dialogue between practitioner, method, material, and the surrounding world.
Job assignments
The professor is a member of Steneby's Crafts and Design Department, but the main responsibilities will relate to the Textile-Body-Space and Applied Art and Design programmes. Duties will include supervising students; responsibility for the degree courses at the first- and second-cycle levels; and serving as an examiner. You will take part in planning and implementing courses together with the programme director and teaching staff working within their respective programmes.
The professor is part of developing the direction and artistic quality of the programme, in collaboration with colleagues and other professors at HDK Steneby. The professor has a significant role in establishing complete environments in which you will have the opportunity to conduct your own research. The work includes developing networks and partnerships within and outside academia, both nationally and internationally.
