The department of materials and manufacturing today consists of 35 researchers and PhD students with background in material science, chemistry, mechanics and physics. The research is interdisciplinary and includes the whole chain from casting and coating process and material properties to materials science as well as modelling and simulation. There are 4 main research areas that work closely: Al and other light alloys, cast iron, surface technology and simulation and optimization technology. They form a cutting edge research group at Jönköping University and School of Engineering and have a well-equipped experimental lab for both manufacturing processes and materials characterization. Besides their fundamental research requirements, most of our research projects are industrial oriented and involve high-tech industrial partners.
Job description
A post-doctoral position is available for highly-motivated candidates with a background in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent. The post doc work will be mainly focused on a new research project focuses on the practical research of developing advanced metallic alloys, using novel concepts such as high entropy alloys. The aim is to develop existing (super)alloys in order to extend their microstructural stability at elevated temperature for applications under harsh conditions.
The job tasks will involve thermodynamic alloy design calculations, microstructural characterization with different techniques such as SEM, room and high temperature mechanical tests and corrosion investigations, modeling, and statistical analysis of data. The position require close cooperation with, not only the department personal, but also industrial partners in the project.
Qualifications
The candidate must have a PhD degree with specialization in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, materials physics or equivalent. The PhD degree should have been obtained no more than 3 years before the deadline for application. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, paternal leave or similar.
You need to:
- have experimental and theoretical knowledge of techniques sush as SEM, TEM, XRD, EDS, EBSD, FIB/SEM etc., as well as physico-mechanical characterization techniques such as tensile, compression, gleeble, DSC/TGA,
- have experience in analysis of the data with good knowledge of possible errors and limitations.
- thoroughly understand the scientific ethic rules and demonstrate a successful scientific record via publication in high-ranked journals/conferences.
- be able to demonstrate commitment to technical and scientific excellence as well as timeliness of deliverables.
- be able to demonstrate the ability to express ideas and report scientific results efficiently and clearly in oral and written format.
- have a good level of the English language, both written and oral, due to the international working environment.
An extensive background in physical and mechanical metallurgy is merited.

- be result-oriented and have high level of motivation and will to face challenges and conduct systematic research to solve them, if necessary by learning/adopting new techniques/theories.
- thoroughly understand and conduct good research practices according to the desired time table.
- be creative and eager to share the knowledge via publication in reputed journals/conferences (following the project agreement and disclosure matters).
- be able to efficiently supervise under- and/or post-graduate students, if necessary.
- be willing to participate in teaching activities, if necessary.
- be willing to travel to industrial sites and/or conference participations at least once a year, if necessary.
- demonstrate ability to work efficiently, conscientiously and professionally both independently and in a international team environment.
Information
Employment start from 1 of October, 2018 or after agreement. Tempory position for two years, full time (100%). Working condition is regulated in collective agreements.
