Department of Forest Ecology and Management
We will hire a Postdoctoral fellow to measure belowground site occupancy and soil resource sharing/competition in Scots pine, Norway spruce, and mixtures of the two. This will be part of a broader collaborative project entitled 'Science for enhanced forest productivity to meet the demands of a bio-based society' at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Umeå, Sweden). The broader project funded by the prestigious K. and A. Wallenberg Foundation to update forest management by the incorporation of new science. The postdoctoral fellow will be under the supervision of John Marshall, but working closely with a larger group of scientists. The department includes 90 people of about 10 are professors. Duties:
The main responsibility of the postdoctoral fellow is to apply stable isotopic labels to soils and measure their incorporation into mature trees. The fellow will be in charge of analyses and writing. Additional field- or lab-work will be carried out based on the expertise and interest of the hired candidate. This project will take place at an experimental site near Gävle, Sweden, but there are also opportunities to develop work at the near-by Flakaliden and Rosinedal experiments and at the Krycklan catchment.

Qualifications:
We seek a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher who has a strong interest in forest ecophysiology. The candidate should have experience with the use of stable water and nitrogen isotopes in forests and the ability to program and analyze data in R. Evidence of successful participation in team projects would also be helpful. Applicants must have completed and defended their Ph.D. in ecology, environmental sciences or a related field by the start of the appointment. The position is intended for junior scientists and we are preferably looking for applicants that have received their PhD not later than three years ago.
