Subject area
Cervical mucosal biology
Subject area description
Mucosal surfaces are key interfaces exposed to microbes; their defense systems prevent disease. Understanding how these systems develop and fail is essential. About 15 million children are born preterm annually, causing ~1 million deaths. In over half of cases, vaginal microbes ascend into the uterus, triggering inflammation and early labor. A cervical mucus plug (CMP), secreted by goblet cells, normally prevents this but shows altered properties in women at risk of preterm birth. Little is known about CMP maturation or its barrier mechanisms. This project integrates mouse models and human samples to study CMP formation and failure, aiming to improve diagnosis and prevention of preterm delivery. The candidate will perform independent research, contribute to project design, collaborate within the WCMTM network, and may supervise students.
Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to work extensively with pre-clinical mouse models and human samples. The candidate will be expected to conduct their experimental research in an independent manner and to make significant contributions to project planning. The candidate will also actively contribute to the local research environment at the Mucin Biology Groups and engage in interactions with collaborators and other groups belonging to the WCMTM network. If necessary, the candidate may also be asked to assist in the supervision of Masters or PhD students.
