Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/aquatic-sciences) is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The department has some 130 employees. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as on environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology. The department is part of a Soil-Water-Environment cluster, a competence centre for landscape-level processes that also includes the Departments of 'Soil and Environment' and 'Energy and Technology'. The breadth of expertise among the 300 members in combination with a well-equipped infrastructure creates a unique platform for high quality research as well as environmental monitoring and assessment.

Duties:
We are seeking for a postdoc, who will work on development and evaluation of innovative treatment processes for removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. The specific objectives are to i) evaluate alternative innovative pretreatment processes, ii) assess innovative treatment trains to meet new strict drinking water regulations, and iii) use alternative methods to treat contaminated process water for safe release or reuse. The tasks will also include sampling, extraction of environmental samples, processing of large data sets, data analysis, statistical evaluation and writing of peer-reviewed scientific publications. The treatment train will include nanofiltration, foam fractionation, electrochemical oxidation, anion exchange and biofilters. The research is carried out in collaboration with drinking water producers as well as engineers and toxicologists. The postdoc will also take responsibility for project management as well as leading and organizing meetings within the project SIDWater (funded by Formas).

Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a PhD degree in environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, or equivalent. As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most. Specialisation towards chemical engineering of treatment methods and experience with chemical analyses methods using LC-MS/MS are valuable merits. Data processing skills using statistical computing and graphics, e.g. R, MATLAB, etc., are of merits too. Emphasis is also placed on personal characteristics such as communication skills, interpersonal skills, engineering, analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently. Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required.
