We are looking for a postdoc fascinated by modelling the challenging response of sensitive clays. You will become the key contributor for generating data based on physics-based models for low probability events, such as shallow landslides in sensitive clays. The ambition is to create training data for subsequent data-driven modelling. We offer access to unique experimental data and computational tools developed by our research team for addressing this ambition.

Project overview
The aim is to enable the next generation of data driven modelling of landslides in sensitive clays by transforming our existing code base on complex physics-based constitutive models into the new era of High Performance Computing (HPC). The developments are built upon FEniCSx linking with DTCC platform

Information about the division and the department
Geotechnics research in Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering focuses on characterisation and modelling of complex geomaterials, in particular natural clays. The research activities aim to bridge fundamental understanding and advanced modelling & testing capabilities with application in engineering practice. Our work on experimental testing and numerical modelling at laboratory and field scale is internationally recognised, and thus we are active members in the ALERT Geomaterials network and many international committees. Our international team with over 15 full-time researchers offers a great working environment to learn and develop. In this project we will also collaborate with Prof. Anders Logg from Mathematics.

Main responsibilities

• Independent research and research training (typically 90% of time)
• Support for education and activities within the research area and department (typically 10% of time) with opportunities to supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students
• Potential for international collaborations and secondments
• Opportunities for pedagogical and language courses both nationally and internationally (e.g. Nordic Five Tech and ALERT Geomaterials)

Qualifications

• PhD degree in Computational Mechanics, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or a related topic, with strong emphasis on implementation of constitutive models
• Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement efficient constitutive models at boundary value level
• Experience in programming
• Strong interest and commitment to Open Source initiatives such as FEniCSx
• Fluency in spoken and written English.
• Willingness to learn Swedish, as necessary for providing teaching support at undergraduate and Master's level. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two/three years.
