Your team
You will be working in the Accelerator Development group consisting of a wide variety of experts within the accelerator field, including accelerator physicists, RF experts and laser experts.

The Accelerator Development team is a part of MAX IV Accelerator Division, which is responsible for developing and operating all accelerator-based light sources at MAX IV.

Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?

MAX IV is looking for a Post Doc who will work on collective effects in the MAX 4U upgrade project as well as on the existing MAX IV storage rings.
The accelerators at the MAX IV facility are the core components for production of synchrotron radiation. There are two storage rings and one linear accelerator. The largest of these accelerators is the 3 GeV electron storage ring, which is the first in the world to employ a multi-bend-achromat magnet lattice to deliver ultrahigh-brightness synchrotron radiation. It is the first of the new generation of storage rings with extremely low emittance, of which only three are currently in operation, while several synchrotron radiation facilities worldwide are upgrading in this direction. We intend to stay at the forefront and are therefore already studying improved accelerator designs and components.
In particular, since January 2024 MAX IV is engaged in the design of a major upgrade to its 3 GeV ring, called MAX 4U. The upgrade aims at an outstanding improvement in light source performance to maintain MAXIV's competitive edge beyond the end of this decade. The project requires extensive theoretical studies and simulations of the collective effects to help demonstrate that the final design can reach the desired beam current, energy spread and emittance.

Your main work tasks will be

- Using simulation tools such as MBTRACK, PyHeadTail, Elegant, calculate thresholds of coherent collective instabilities in MAX 4U, focusing on the reduced momentum compaction.
- Impedance measurements on the existing ring
- Impedance calculations for MAX 4U
- Improve the existing impedance model of the 3 GeV ring
- Co-author the conceptual design report for MAX 4U
- Take part in operational efforts of the MAX IV accelerators

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

- PhD in accelerator physics or equivalent
- In depth knowledge of accelerator physics
- Programming skills e.g. python, MATLAB, C
- Fluent in written and spoken English

Below are seen as merits

- Experience of accelerator operations
- Experience with instability threshold calculations and measurements

As a person you are a team worker, self-driven and work well under pressure.

Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances the PhD can have been completed previous to the aforementioned three years.

Further information
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment. A postdoctoral fellow is employed under a period
of at least two years and at most three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement "Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01" ("Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01")
