Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees – is an organisation in constant change and development. The university’s researchers carry out excellence within several areas of research, and many of them are among the world’s elite. We are one of Sweden’s largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes. Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.
Post-doc position in Computer- Aided Molecular Design
The Department of Chemistry is looking for a post doctoral fellow for molecular modelling in drug design related projects (one year with a possibility for a one year extension). The post-doc will be part of the modelling group of Anna Linusson.
The research activities at the Department of Chemistry have a strong focus on Biological Chemistry. One of the major directions is focusing on understanding the underlying mechanisms of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and bacteria infection. This is achieved by applying computational tools like molecular modelling and chemometrics in combination with experimental efforts using small synthesized bioorganic molecules. These compounds are examined in biological model systems using immunological, microbiological and pharmacological approaches.
The current recruitment is intended to intensify the efforts on the computer-based evaluation of the interaction strength of protein-ligand complexes. The person will work on the development of new methods to identify binding modes and evaluate binding strength of docked ligands based on molecular interaction fields (MIF). The project is in collaboration with Ismael Zamora (Lead Molecular Design & IMIM Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain). In addition to the method developments, the post-doc will be part of drug design projects to test and evaluate the new methods and in the computer-aided design of novel molecules.
We are looking for a candidate with a Ph.D. in computational chemistry/biophysics/biology. Programming skills in Linux environments using Java, C++, python or perl are required, as well as experience with ligand- and structure-based design. An understanding and working knowledge of packages such as Amber, GRID, Simca, MOE, OpenEye and Schrödinger is preferred. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are also required.
For further information about the position, please contact Anna Linusson, phone: +46 90 786 68 90, e-mail: anna.linusson@chem.umu.se .

The application should contain a Curriculum Vitae, a list of publications, and contact information of three reference persons.
Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.
Your complete application, marked with reference number 315-2940-08 , should be sent to jobb@umu.se (with reference number on the subject line) or in paper form to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive October 6, 2008 at the latest.
