The marine microbiology research group seeks a Post Doctoral researcher for studies of the functional genomics of marine bacteria. The position is for 1 year (60% of full time), with possibility for a one-year extension, and located in Kalmar.
Project title: Functional genomics for carbon cycling of marine planktonic bacteria.
The research project: Marine bacteria play a central role in driving global biogeochemical cycles of elements essential to life (e.g. carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous), but detailed knowledge of how bacteria carry out specific steps in element cycling is lacking. The main goal of this project is to investigate the molecular mechanisms employed by marine bacteria to utilize dissolved organic carbon compounds. Work will include research on the functional genomics of bacterioplankton using bioinformatics analysis of genome-sequenced marine bacteria and metagenomic/-transcriptomic datasets from natural bacterial assemblages.
Applicants should have a doctoral degree in marine or general microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular biology or biochemistry or similar. Applicants should have documented expertise in bioinformatics/computational biology to infer the physiology and ecology of environmental microorganisms. Experience with assessing the microbial biodiversity in natural samples using next-generation sequencing methodologies is well appreciated. The starting point for the position is April 15th 2013.
