We are seeking a post doc for a collaborative project between SLU and Stora Enso's Forest Division. The project is part of a larger research initiative between SLU and Stora Enso on 5 Ph D students and 5 post docs, which opens opportunities for external collaboration where we can learn more about forestry.
This post doc will take on key issues in forest conservation biology by analysing data from the National Forest Inventories and synthesizing scientific literature. The collaboration with Stora Enso generates a high societal relevance to the project. The post doc will work at the Department of Ecology and become a part of a strong research environment in focusing on conservation biology, both by empirical studies and in synthesis projects (see
https://www.slu.se/en/departments/ecology/contact/vetenskapligaamnen/naturvardsbiologi/).At the Department of Ecology in Uppsala, we conduct research for sustainable forest and agricultural production and efficient biological conservation. We study the influence of land use and climate on animals, plants, soils nutrient status, and greenhouse gas balances. Solutions are sought that will mitigate climate change, preserve threatened species, benefit biological diversity and ecosystem services, and control pests in forest and agricultural landscapes as well as in urban areas. The post doc is main responsible for conducting an analysis of National Forest Inventory data and a scientific review. You are supposed to contribute actively to the development and planning of the studies, independently coordinate the practical work and analyse collected data, and write scientific publications together with a research group. You will write popular science reports which will be used within Stora Enso's organisation and contribute to the collaboration activities between Stora Enso and SLU.
Qualifications:
The applicant should hold a Ph D in ecology (or in a similar relevant subject, which SLU assesses as equivalent). Since post doc positions are intended for junior researchers, preferably the Ph D has been received within the last three years. Experience from the relevant research questions (nature conservation in forests, forestry, landscape ecology, conservation strategies, especially in Northern Europe) is a merit. Experience from statistical analyses of large data sets, systematic searches for scientific literature, and writing review papers is a merit. A strong publication record (in relation to the time since dissertation) is a merit. The applicant is supposed to be able to take own initiatives and work both independently and in a group. Excellent skills in written and oral communication in English are required. The application must contain: (i) a summary of the research experience, expectations on this position and future plans (max 1 page) (2) CV, and (3) two reference persons.
